N.M. Fishing Report — Dec. 18

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Closed for the season. Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 14 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Clayton Lake: Closed for the season. Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair to good using slab spoons for white bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was light. Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week. Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Eagle Nest Lake: There is a thin layer of ice on the lake at this time and no fishing permitted. Contact the State Park office at (575) 377-1594 for updated conditions. Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week. Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Maloya: Fishing was fair using Power Bait and Gulp eggs for trout. We had no reports on perch. Fishing pressure was light. Los Pinos: Fishing was good using salmon eggs and copper John Barrs for trout. Manzano Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, garlic cheese, corn and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no reports on other species. Maxwell Lake 13: Closed for the season. Monastery Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. Morphy Lake: Closed for the season. Mt View Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 18 cfs. Trout fishing in the Villanueva area was slow to fair for anglers using salmon eggs for trout. Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 32 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using poundmeisters, wooly buggers, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs. Rio Costilla: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 602 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 11 cfs. Trout fishing was slow. Rio Pueblo: We had no reports from anglers this week. Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week. Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Storrie Lake: Fishing was good using Power Bait and corn for trout. We had no reports on other species. Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Ute Lake: Prior to the cold wind coming in over the past weekend fishing was very good using slab spoons and blade baits for white bass and walleye with several limits reported. Most of the fish caught were found in 25 to 35 feet of water. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 40s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing pressure was very light and fishing was slow for all species. Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 317 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain was very good for anglers using worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout. Fishing for trout on the Belen and Peralta Drain was very good using salmon eggs, corn and worms under a float. We had no reports on other species or from the other drains. Bluewater Lake: Fishing was slow for all species and fishing pressure was very light. There was some ice along the shoreline in the early morning hours but the lake was open for launching boats and shore fishing. For updated ice conditions contact the State Park office at (505) 876-2391. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake. Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week. Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week. Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 215 cfs and 232 cfs respectively. Trout fishing above El Vado was fair to good using bead-head wooly buggers for brown trout. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair using salmon eggs, wooly buggers and copper John Barrs. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair using a variety of bead-head nymphs for a mixed bag of rainbow and brown trout. Cochiti Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. El VadoLake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Fenton Lake: A layer of ice has formed on the lake and it is closed to ice fishing. Put this one back on your list for great fishing early next spring. Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species and fishing pressure was light. The area received about five inches of snow over the weekend and there was some ice forming around the shoreline. Jackson Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species. Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 22 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez River was fair using copper John Barrs and salmon eggs. We had no reports from the other streams in the area. Laguna Del Campo: Closed for the season. Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Navajo Lake: Fishing pressure was light and fishing was slow for all species. San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers. San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo on Monday was 353 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using midge patterns, Griffith’s gnats, San Juan worms, fluff baetis and small bead-head pheasant tails. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using salmon eggs, Power Bait, copper John Barrs, wooly buggers and small jerk baits. Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week. Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was very good using Pistol Petes, small spoons, Power Bait, garlic cheese and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond. Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Trout fishing was very good using olive and black Pistol Petes and salmon eggs. Bear Canyon: Trout fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, Velveeta cheese and Power Bait. Bill Evans Lake: Trout fishing was good for anglers using cheese, Power Bait, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species. Caballo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good using slab spoons and blade baits for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow with just a few largemouth bass caught by anglers using jigs. We had no reports on other species. Escondida Lake: Fishing was good using garlic scented Power Bait, Velveeta cheese, Pistol Petes and Kastmasters for trout. We had no reports on other species. Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 83 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using Power Bait for trout. Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week. Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week. Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Grande: We had no reports from anglers this week. Snow Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs for trout. Young Pond: Trout fishing was very good using rainbow and chartreuse Power Bait and Velveeta cheese. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and small Kastmasters for trout. We had no reports on other species. Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 102 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using garlic cheese, Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species. Bonito Lake: Closed. Bosque Redondo: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species. Bottomless Lakes: Fishing at Pasture Lake and Devil’s Inkwell was good using Power Bait, garlic cheese and corn for trout. Brantley Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Fishing was fair to good using chartreuse Power Bait, salmon eggs and garlic cheese for trout. Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. El Rito Creek: Fishing was good using salmon eggs and garlic Power Bait for trout. Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait for trout. Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was good using salmon peach Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no reports on other species. Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was good for anglers using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes. Jal Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. Lake Van: We had no reports from anglers this week. Oasis Park Lake: Trout fishing was very good using marshmallows and orange and rainbow Power Bait. We had no reports on other species. The water was a bit murky from strong winds in the area. Perch Lake: Fishing was good using olive Pistol Petes, Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner on Monday was 17 cfs. Fishing below Sumner was good using Power Bait and homemade dough bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 13 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Santa Rosa Lake: High winds kept anglers off the lake all week. We had no reports.
