Family of slain mother seeks park safety improvements

Staff report

The family of Ariel Ulibarri would like to see safety improvements at the park where the young mother was stabbed to death on Nov. 9.

A statement from the family released Tuesday also asks for privacy as they adjust to life without her.

The statement from attorney Matt Chandler reads:

“Ariel’s family would like her to be remembered for who she was as a daughter, a sister, a mother and a friend — not by the circumstances surrounding her death. While a memorial at the walking trail would be a means to honor her life, they also understand that it could be viewed as a reminder of the tragedy that occurred on the morning of (her death).

“The family believes that a better memorial would be a city commitment to making the park a safer place for members of our community, by clearing some of the trees at the park’s entrance, or installing lights along the walking paths. Either way, the family understands that the choice lies with city officials and will respect their final decision on this matter.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support that came from so many members of our community during this time. The thoughts and prayers from those who knew and loved Ariel have been a tremendous blessing to our family. At this time, we graciously request the opportunity to return to the privacy of our own matters, while we adjust to life without Ariel.”

Matthew Jennings, 25, of Clovis has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of Ulibarri, 23.

Police have said they believe the attack was random and Jennings did not know Ulibarri, but they continue to search for a motive in the slaying.
