On this date …

1974: A ninth-grade Gattis Junior High School student was killed and another teenager critically injured when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a car about three miles west of the intersection of Prince Street and Llano Estacado Boulevard. Michael Hickey, 14, was thrown 25 feet on impact and was dead on arrival at the hospital. Sylvan Bennett, also 14, suffered a skull fracture and broken leg. Bennett died two days later in an El Paso hospital. He never regained consciousness.

1966: New members of the Clovis Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors were Bob Harper, Bob Upton, Pete Davis, Manuel Baca, Leon Williams, Vernon Mills, Howard Horne, Charles Wade and Bob Lydick. Williams was named president of the board.

1952: Terry Jack Jones, 2, was in the hospital after a horse kicked him above his right eye. The child, who lived near Melrose, was reported in good condition.

New store in town …

1960: D&M Superette at Seventh and Hull in Clovis was hosting its grand opening. Christmas candy was 25 cents a pound. Northern white or colored tissues were 12 rolls for $1. Four cans of Del Monte light meat chunk tuna were $1.

Scary stuff …

1958: “The Blob” and “I Married a Monster from Outer Space” were showing at Clovis’ Lyceum theater. “We dare you not to shriek,” a newspaper ad was headlined.
