Ex-CHS star Dawson will transfer

Staff report

MILWAUKEE — Clovis’ John Dawson is transferring from the Marquette basketball team.

First-year coach Steve Wojciechowski announced Dawson and fellow sophomore guard Deonte Burton’s departures on Tuesday.

They will leave the already short-handed team even thinner at the end of the first semester on Sunday.

Dawson, a 2013 Clovis High graduate, hasn’t played since a season-opening win over Tennessee-Martin. Both players were recruited by former coach Buzz Williams, who left last spring for Virginia Tech.

David Dawson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in a phone interview on Tuesday afternoon that his son’s decision to transfer has been a discussion within the family for some time after they “saw the handwriting on the wall when the changes came early on during the year.”

His son has not made a commitment to any specific school yet, David Dawson told the Journal Sentinel.

Dawson played 10.2 minutes per game during the 2013-14 season, but made a big splash in Marquette’s 80-72 overtime win at Georgetown on Jan. 20. He played 31 minutes that game and scored 12 points, including seven in overtime.

The Golden Eagles (4-4) next play on Dec. 16 against Arizona State, when center Luke Fischer becomes eligible after transferring from Indiana last season. Fischer would give Marquette eight active scholarship players.
