‘Tis the season to be jolly.

I can’t believe it’s Christmas party time already. My employee Christmas party is only a week away and I haven’t thought about what to wear until today.

I suggested to our editor that he should wear an ugly Christmas sweater to this year’s party. He graciously endorsed the idea.

Ugly sweater parties were all the rage at Christmas time last year. So, it’s only fair that those of us who missed out last year, or our entire lives... get to wear one this year.

You can find a gallery of examples in magazines and party pictures online where the famed and celebrated have hosted their ugly sweater parties.

Here are three reasons why you should wear a tacky holiday sweater to this year’s Christmas party:

• They’re ugly. The most obvious reason is the best reason. In many cases something ugly translates into a gut-busting experience. Christmas parties can be boring because when you’re not the one making up the invitation list, you may come with an inhibited spirit. If there’s not going to be any liquid courage at your party this year, your ugly sweater will most definitely break the ice.

• The outfit you planned to wear before you knew you were wearing a tacky sweater is now reserved for the next party. Most of us have more than one Christmas party to attend, so now you’re down one outfit to plan for. Now, if you have more than one ugly sweater party you’re going to...don’t wear the same one. Go get yourself an ugly holiday vest instead. Better yet, maybe you can borrow one from that person who wears them every year. Not for fun but for real. Which brings us to reason number three.

• Make something old into something new. You may have one already buried in your closet somewhere or may have relatives who own a few. The tacky holiday sweater is trending now. Halloween doesn’t have to be the only time you get to dress up in theme clothing.

If you can’t find a sweater at local stores, try searching online for great shipping deals. There are different types of Christmas sweaters that are vintage, up-cycled embellished, and brand new if you go online. Or, you can always try your local consignment shops.
