CHS girls basketball capsule — Dec. 5

Clovis vs. Amarillo Tascosa

• When: 9:30 a.m. (MST) today in the quarterfinal round of a 12-team tournament hosted by Canyon H.S. Win or lose, the Lady Wildcats play again at 5:30 p.m. (MST) against either Canyon Randall or Abilene Wylie.

• Radio: KCLV-FM 99.1

• Records: Clovis 1-0, Tascosa n/a.

• Last time out: The Lady Cats got past Amarillo Palo Duro 51-45 on the road on Tuesday night. Tascosa opened play in the tournament on Friday with a 67-43 victory over Canadian.

• Last meeting: The teams haven’t played in CHS coach Jeff Reed’s seven seasons at the helm.

• Of note: Reed said the Lady Cats will be tested by the Class 6A Lady Rebels. “They’re very athletic,” said Reed, who scouted Thursday’s Tascosa-Canadian game. “They get up and down the court, and they have good role players. Tascosa would be a contender for the 6A championship in New Mexico.” … Top Tascosa players include junior Ps Jasmine Horner and Keira McKinney, senior G Latravia Taylor and sophomore G Markaashia Richardson. Horner scored 17 points, Taylor 13 and Richardson 11 against Canadian while McKinney, whom Reed said “is probably 6-3 or 6-4,” finished with eight. … Reed said the strategy is to guard the paint. “We’re going to run a zone and hope they can’t shoot the 3,” he said. “They want to run, so we’ll have to play good transition defense.” … Senior P Shelby Jones (knee), who was limited to two minutes a quarter in the Palo Duro game, will now get three minutes a quarter today,” Reed said.
