Clovis leads way on 4-6A selections

Following a 3-0 run through District 4-6A, the Clovis Wildcats were well represented on the inaugural All-District 4-6A team, released this week.

In all, the Wildcats had 26 selections and 11 first-teamers, both tops among all four members of the district.

Wildcats seniors Jordan Holguin and Kaine Bender shared defensive player of the year honors, while sophomore Micah Gray was named newcomer of the year. Longtime coach Eric Roanhaus was named as the district’s coach of the year.

First-team selections for Clovis were Tabor Stanfield and Isaiah Callahan on offensive line, Gray at running back, Roland Chavez at tight end, Alejandro Perez on defensive line, Holguin and Estevan Romero at defensive end, Matt Lanier and Dylan Smith at linebacker and Bender in the secondary.

Clovis second-teamers were Jorge Lazoya on offensive line, Tucker Dobbs and Christian Caldwell at receiver, Juan San Juan at running back, Wes Lemke at tight end, Garren Bass on defensive line, Brian McCormick at defensive end and Antonio Hicks and Brody Edwards in the secondary.

Honorable mentions for Clovis were Daulton Hatley at quarterback, Josh Gomez at offensive line, David Vela at running back, Luke Bussen as place kicker, Jashawn Balancier at linebacker, Jaquan Franklin in the secondary and Holguin as punter.

The offensive player of the year was Torian Lintz of Hobbs, which received 22 overall selections and eight on the first team. District runnerup Carlsbad also had eight first-team selections and 19 overall picks. Alamogordo, which went 0-3 in district, had three first-teamers among its 16 overall selections.

Clovis, which finished the season 6-6, was the district’s only playoff representative. The Wildcats, seeded 10th in Class 6A, beat Sandia 21-7 in the first round before falling to second-seeded Mayfield 35-21 in the quarterfinals.
