Report: Violent crimes in Clovis decrease over last five years

Staff report

Violent crimes reported to law enforcement have steadily decreased in Clovis over the last five years, according to numbers released Nov. 10 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The report shows Clovis had 277 violent crimes in 2009. That number dropped to 269 last year, despite a population increase of more than 7,000 since 2009.

The city saw just 209 violent crimes reported in 2011.

Violent crimes are classified in the report as murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, all of which involve force or threat of force.

Teh FBI report also shows property crime, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson were also lower in 2013 than in 2008.

The list ranks Clovis’ reported offense numbers only against the city’s previous years of reporting, and does not rank against other cities within the state or nation.

A statement released in the Clovis Police Department’s 2013 annual report in March also indicates a decrease in violent crimes.

“The department’s successes can be measured in the amount of crime being reported in Clovis. In 2013, I am proud to announce we saw an overall decrease in our indexed crimes. This includes the categories of homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle thefts,” Chief of Police Steve Sanders wrote.
