Breckenridge used an efficient ground game and stout defense to beat Muleshoe 28-7 Thursday in the area round of the Class 3A Division I playoffs in Snyder, Texas.

Quarterback Cade Cornett scored twice for the Buckaroos (7-5), including a 68-yard keeper that put his team up 21-7 midway through the third quarter.

Breckenridge limited Muleshoe (8-4) to a season-low seven points.

Held to 53 yards on the ground, Muleshoe threw the ball 43 times, completing 21 for 208 yards. In comparison, Breckenridge rushed the ball 47 times and threw it six times.

The Mules, who had their eight-game win streak snapped, scored first on Keegan Gonzales’’ 9-yard pass to Chamel Regalado late in the first quarter.
