Texico at Tularosa

• When: 1 p.m. Saturday in a first-round Class 3A game

• Records: Texico 3-7, Tularosa 4-6

• Last week: Texico, seeded 10th in the 12-team field, won at home over Loving 43-15. The seventh-seeded Wildcats lost at home to Lordsburg 35-20.

• Last meeting: The teams played at Texico in the 2012 Class 2A semifinals, with Tularosa winning 26-21. The Wildcats lost to Santa Rosa in the state finals the following week.

• Of note: Tularosa has faced two of Texico’s District 4-3A rivals, losing at Dexter 32-28 and winning at Eunice 43-14 early in the season. “They’re fast, and they’ve got a quarterback (senior Nick Sheppard) who’s really athletic,” Wolverines coach Ryan Autrey said. “I thinks if we can contain their speed, we’ll be all right.” … Saturday’s winner advances to a quarterfinal game next week at second-seeded Lordsburg. Texico coach Ryan Autrey said if it’s the Wolverines, the game will probably be on Saturday. … Texico ended a six-game losing streak with its win over Loving. “We played pretty well,” Autrey said. “Loving’s not the calibre of team we’ve been playing, but I feel like if we’d played a little better we could’ve won a couple of those other games. … Key players for the Wildcats include senior QB Nick Sheppard, senior WR/OLB Cameron Sheppard, senior WR/ILB Marcus Mendez and senior WR/OLB Sean Kernohan. “They’ll spread you out, but it’s mostly so they can run (inside),” Autrey said.

Magdalena at Melrose

• When: 2 p.m. Saturday in an 8-man semifinal

• Records: Magdalena 10-0, Melrose 9-1

• Last week: Magdalena blanked Dora 62-0 and Melrose thumped Tatum 52-14, both at home, in quarterfinal matchups.

• Last meeting: The teams have never met. Magdalena moved down from the former Class 1A to 8-man this season.

• Of note: Melrose won a coin flip to determine homefield advantage in the game. … The Buffaloes are hoping to get to the finals and win a sixth title in coach Dickie Roybal’s 19 seasons. They captured 6-man crowns in 1999 and 2004, and won three consecutive 8-man titles from 2008-10. … Melrose was scheduled to host the Steers early this season, but the game was canceled when Magdalena ended up with a game against Gateway Christian the same day in Roswell. … Magdalena won that game 40-30, easily its closest game to date, and the only time the Steers have allowed more than eight points and scored fewer than 57. None of the other contests has been decided by less than 50 points, and Magdalena has beaten its last four opponents by a combined 272-0 … Melrose, meantime, won its District 4 opener from the Warriors 38-12 at Roswell. The teams have four other common opponents — Dora, Cloudcroft, Mountainair and Mescalero. … Top players for the Steers are senior FB/DL Zach Pino, senior RB/DB Barak Stephens and senior QB/DB Dre Montoya. “They’re a very big, physical football team; they’re undefeated for a reason,” Roybal said. “I think we can have success, but we’ve got to continue to play like we’ve been playing.”

Muleshoe vs. Kermit

• When: 7 p.m. (CDT) today in a Class 3A Division I bidistrict game at Wolfforth

• Records: Muleshoe 7-3, Kermit 3-8

• Last week: The Mules won at Littlefield 34-27. Kermit lost to Brownfield 61-27.

• Last meeting: The Mules hammered the Yellow Jackets 41-13 on Sept. 26 at Muleshoe.

• Of note: The Yellow Jackets finished fourth in 3A Division I District II. Meantime, Muleshoe took the District 1 championship last field with a 2-yard touchdown run by senior Keagan Gonzalez in the final minute to edge rival Littlefield. “It was a great win for the program,” Mules coach David Wood said. … The Mules were 1-3 when they faced Kermit in September, and since then are on a six-game winning streak. “They’ve changed their defense since the last time we played them, but it’s still the same kids,” Wood said of the Yellow Jackets. “We’ve got to prepare for them like we prepare any other week.” … The winner advances to an area round game against either Breckenridge (5-5) or Clyde (5-5), who meet tonight at Weatherford. The next game would be on Thursday at Snyder, Wood said.
