Rambelles defeat Zias

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State survived a close first set and pulled away to a 25-23, 25-17, 25-15 Lone Star Conference volleyball victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday.

Despite the loss, the Zias (12-15, 4-10 LSC) clinched their second consecutive berth in the eight-team LSC tournament, scheduled for two weeks from now in Canyon, Texas. ENMU stands sixth in the nine-team league, one-half game ahead of Cameron and one game up on Texas A&M-Commerce.

Senior middle blocker Agatha Gibbons posted a match-high 13 kills for the Zias, giving her double digits in that category in five of the team’s last six matches.

Sophomore Lauren Frye had nine kills, while senior setter Kennedi Catano had 19 assists and freshman defensive specialist Andrea Aguilar collected 21 digs.

ENMU took a 21-19 late in the first set before the Rambelles (18-6, 10-5) rallied back. The Zias took an 11-9 lead in the second game, but ASU dominated from there and used a 9-3 run in the third to take control.
