Rams win first district match in three straight games

The Portales Rams got off to the kind of District 4-4A start they wanted, cruising to a three game win against the East Mountain 25-13, 25-11, 25-7 at the Ram Athletic Center on Saturday. The Rams (5-10, 1-0) also snapped a four-game losing streak with their win over the Timberwolves (2-12, 0-1).

“I thought this was a good game for our first district game.,” said junior Sheraya Cox, who had team-high 14 kills. “We came out and took control of the game, we could have made a few less errors but it was a great effort overall,”

Rams coach Ruth Chavez was happy her team was able to break their losing streak.

“It was a good win, and a good way to start off the district season,” Chavez said. “We needed some confidence. We talked about how we wanted to keep them under 15 in the second game and under seven in the third game and we did both.”

The Rams had 19 service saces, led by Victoria Cordova with seven.

“We started the game off well and continued to push the pace as the game went on,” said junior Kambrey Blakey, who had eight kills. “We’re going to keep improving as the season goes on and this was a good start for us,”

The Rams have a tough test Tuesday night as they face Ruidoso, which sports an 11-5 record.

“They’re a good team and we’re going to have to bring our best game here in order to beat them.” Chavez said.

Last year the Rams defeated the Warriors in three games.
