East Mountain turns back PHS squads

Staff report

SANDIA PARK — Senior midfielder Emily Baldoni posted a hat trick on Friday and East Mountain defeated Portales 4-1 in District 4/1-4A girls soccer.

Baldoni scored two goals three minutes apart midway through the first half, then made it 3-0 early in the second stanza.

The Timberwolves (12-4, 2-0 district) added another goal with about two minutes left before the Lady Rams (7-8-1, 1-1) broke up the shutout with a goal from Kailee Ramirez in the final minute.

“Our girls worked hard,” PHS girls coach Sarah Vasquez said. “We got our goal late, so it shows we didn’t give up. We’ll try to come back on Monday (in a 1 p.m. makeup against Ruidoso at the PHS soccer field) and get another district win.”

East Mountain outshot the Lady Rams 11-4, with sophomore goalkeeper Azsjuh Howell making seven saves for PHS.

In the boys half of the doubleheader, seniors Tan Eberling and Joey Woodyard tallied second-half goals to rally the Timberwolves to a 2-1 win over the Rams.

Senior Lane Nichols’ goal held up to give PHS (4-9-1, 0-3) a 1-0 halftime lead. Portales outshot the Timberwolves 10-6, but East Mountain’s Kenny Potter made nine saves.

The Rams also host Ruidoso on Monday at 3 p.m.
