Jan Elliott has recently assumed the role of executive director of Portales MainStreet and promotions director for the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce.

Elliott is a Clovis resident, former Portales News-Tribune editor and an Eastern New Mexico University graduate.

Elliott has also worked as the EMS Region 3 executive director and as the marketing director for Interim Healthcare’s hospice program.

Improving quality of life in Portales and continuing recruitment and retention of businesses are at the top of Elliot’s list coming into the joint MainStreet/Chamber position.

Elliott is currently in the process of transitioning into her new jobs and helping run MainStreet and chamber events during October.

You have just begun to transition into your dual role at Portales MainStreet and the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce. What does this job entail and what goals have you set for yourself in this new position?

In my job as the executive director of the Portales MainStreet Program, I plan to work with merchants and the community to undertake new and innovative approaches to work on the revitalization of downtown Portales. In my role as promotions director at the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce, my plans include the launching of a media blitz to promote our current chamber members, and encourage future membership growth. We want to strive to increase the value of our community both economically and in the quality of life.

How will your past experiences benefit your current occupation?

My experience has taught me leadership, visionary thinking skills, how to be an effective advocate and excel in professional values. I’ve learned the importance of working as a team to develop momentum, enthusiasm, and pride.

What are three things you'd like to see happening in Portales?

My list is certainly greater than three things, but at the top of the list is opening a movie theater, providing more nightlife along Main Street, and seeking a variety of entertainment at the YAM Theater.

What are the first three songs that play when you set your mp3 player to shuffle?

“Over the Rainbow” by Eve Cassidy, “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison, and “I’ll Fly Away” by Jars of Clay.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I reflect often on my childhood being raised by my grandparents. They always displayed an enthusiastic spirit, were hard working, and had a positive attitude. They were my biggest fans.

Where is your favorite place to vacation?

I always try to vacation somewhere I’ve never been. So far, my favorite trip was an Alaskan Cruise. The scenery was spectacular.

What do you like to do during your free time?

I’m a decent golfer, so anytime I get a chance I hit the course.

What's one of your favorite memories from your time as a student at ENMU?

Playing flag football for the Zetas, weekends at the fraternity houses and dragging Main Street.

Do you have a TV Show or series that you can't stop watching?

I can’t stop watching “Sons of Anarchy.” I’m hooked.

What is your favorite weekend activity?

I love to golf, relax at home with my family and take in a movie.

What is the best concert you have attended?

I saw Adam Lambert in concert with Queen recently and it was awesome.
