New Mexico fishing report — Oct. 9

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait and spinners. We had no reports on perch.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 8.9 cfs. Trout fishing was good using parachute Adams, bead-head pheasant tails, copper John Barrs, small Mepps spinners, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Colorado spoons, Power Bait and worms for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, spinner baits, tubes, worms and chigger craws for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and minnows for a mixed bag of walleye and white bass. Fishing for catfish was slow but a few were caught by anglers using chicken liver and homemade dough baits. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 60s.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and worms.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Kokanee snagging was good with the best area reported being just south of the main boat ramp. Bank fishing was good using roe sacs and Power Bait for rainbow trout and worms for perch. A few trout were caught by anglers trolling spinners tipped with Power Bait on light tackle. We had no reports on northern pike.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: Fishing was fair using worms, grasshoppers and Pistol Petes for trout.

Lake Maloya: Fishing pressure was light and fishing was fair using olive and black Pistol Petes, grasshoppers and worms for rainbow trout. We had no reports on perch.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using wooly buggers, slump busters, small spinners and night crawlers.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was fair using garlic scented Power Bait, marshmallows and salmon eggs for trout. A few were also caught by anglers using Pistol Petes under a bubble. We had no reports on other species.

Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, prince nymphs, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs.

Morphy Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, Power Bait, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs for trout.

Mt View Ponds: Fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 38 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using worms, baetis nymphs, prince nymphs and small streamers. We had no reports on catfish.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 34 cfs. Fishing has been slow with murky water conditions.

Rio Costilla: Water flow on Monday was .41 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 428 cfs. Trout fishing was good using wooly worms, San Juan worms, black micro mays, spinners, small jerk baits and night crawlers. Fishing for smallmouth bass was fair using jerk baits, spinners and wooly buggers. We had no reports on northern pike.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 14 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using copper John Barrs and poundmeisters for trout.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 6.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 6.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: Fishing for trout was slow.

Springer Lake: Fishing pressure was very light. Fishing was slow for all species.

Storrie Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using curly tail grubs, tubes, small salt craws and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using live minnows in 25 to 30-feet of water for walleye. Fishing for all other species was slow. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp ranged from the high 60s to the low 70s.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 55 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: The main entrance to the park has reopened. Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was fair using liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair to good using worms, grasshoppers and salmon eggs for trout.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was fair to good using liver and dough bait for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using spinner baits and chatter baits for largemouth bass. Darrell Carr of Ruidoso caught a 3-pound largemouth while using a green and white chatter bait. He reported that the larger bass were hitting better in the evening hours.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was fair to good using hot dogs, night crawlers, homemade dough bait and liver for catfish.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using garlic-scented Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake: Fishing was fair using liver, night crawlers and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species and fishing pressure was light.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 85 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 21 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing for smallmouth bass was slow but there were a few small fish caught by anglers using crank baits and tubes. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, chigger craws and crank baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was slow with just a few caught by anglers trolling crank baits and bottom bouncer rigs. Night fishing was fair using liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 862 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain was slow for all species. We had no other reports.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits and swim baits for tiger musky. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the low 60s. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 198 cfs and 321 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using salmon eggs, night crawlers, spinners, wooly buggers, bead-head pheasant tails and copper John Barrs for a mixed bag of rainbow and brown trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass and white bass. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Kokanee snagging was slow but should pick up as the fish were just beginning to porpoise. We had no reports on other species.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, garlic-scented Power Bait and worms. Anglers fishing from boats did very well using olive Pistol Petes along the edge of weed lines.

Heron Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. All boat ramps have been closed due to low water conditions. Small boats, canoes and kayaks may still be used. Possession of kokanee is not permitted here or on Willow Creek during the closed season that runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 13.

Jackson Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 14 cfs. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla was good using grasshoppers and worms. Fishing on the Jemez was good for anglers using salmon eggs, worms and copper John Barrs. We had no reports from other Jemez waters.

Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was fair using worms, Pistol Petes and Power Bait for trout.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Kokanee snagging was slow. Fishing for bass was slow but a few fish were caught by anglers using tubes, senkos, sweet beavers and crank baits. Fishing for northern pike was very good using crank baits and spinner baits in less than 10 feet of water. Fishing for perch was fair using worms. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp ranged from the high 50s to the low 60s.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 322 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was very good using olive and grey foam wing emergers, RS2s, San Juan worms, red annelids, BWOs, crystal midges and Johnny flash midges. Fishing through the bait waters was good using jerk baits, night crawlers, salmon eggs, San Juan worms, copper John Barrs and wooly buggers.

Santa Cruz Lake: This water has closed to boating and will remain closed until mid-July of 2015. The only fishing access will be from the overlook, which will remain open. The Bureau of Land Management will be renovating the north lake campground, boat launch, picnic area and main access road. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and small wet flies.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was slow to fair using hot dogs, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species or from anglers fishing the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms for sunfish. We had no reports on other species.

Caballo Lake: Murky water conditions have made fishing a bit tough the past couple of weeks but anglers are still catching a few walleye and white bass. Best baits have been minnows and crank baits fished near the dam. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow with just a few catches reported. Anglers did best using plastics off main lake and secondary points. Tubes, grubs and senkos worked best. Fishing was fair using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using chicken liver, beef liver and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using chicken liver, night crawlers and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 207 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: Fishing was slow for all species.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and worms for trout. A few tiger musky were caught by anglers using crank baits.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 22 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was very good using liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
