New Mexico fishing report — Oct. 2

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait for fish up to 21 inches. We had no reports on perch.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 8.9 cfs. Trout fishing was good using parachute Adams, bead-head pheasant tails, copper John Barrs, small Mepps spinners, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using shrimp for catfish. Trout fishing was good for anglers using gold spoons and spinners. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, jerk bait, tubes, worms and salt craws for smallmouth bass and an occasional largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits for white bass. Fishing for catfish was fair using stink baits, chicken liver and homemade dough baits. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was fair to good using small copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms.

Eagle Rock Lake: Trout fishing was very good using worms, Power Bait and spinners.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and spinners from the bank and trolling with Platte River specials, Z Rays and Panther Martins for rainbow trout and a few small kokanee. Fishing was fair using spoons and spinners for northern pike. Fishing was very good using worms for perch. Four wheel drive vehicles are recommended for launching boats.

HopewellLake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, night crawlers and small dry flies.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was good using black and white Pistol Petes, spinners and spoons for rainbow trout. We had no reports on perch.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, parachute Adams, bead-head hares’ ears, small spinners and worms.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Morphy Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, Power Bait, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs for trout.

Mt. ViewPonds: Fishing was fair using worms and salmon eggs for trout.

PecosRiver: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 48 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using worms, salmon eggs, San Juan worms and small streamers. Fishing in the Villanueva area was slow to fair using night crawlers and salmon eggs for catfish.

RedRiver: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 35 cfs. Fishing was good using San Juan worms, copper John Barrs, bead-head wooly buggers, spinners, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

RioCostilla: Water flow on Monday was 32 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

RioGrande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 322 cfs. Trout fishing was good using wooly worms, poundmeisters, wooly buggers, San Juan worms, spinners and night crawlers. A few smallmouth bass were caught by anglers using wooly buggers and spinners. We had no reports on northern pike.

RioHondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 15 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using copper John Barrs and bead-head hares’ ears for trout.

RioMora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 8.1 cfs. Fishing was fair using small bead-head prince nymphs and worms.

RioPueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 6.8 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using poundmeisters and bead-head pheasant tails for trout.

ShureePonds: Fishing for trout was slow.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

StorrieLake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

UteLake: Fishing was fair to good using tubes, chigger craws and salt craws for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using stink baits, liver and homemade dough baits for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the low 70s.

Southeast

BlackRiver: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 59 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using chicken liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BosqueRedondo: Fishing was slow for all species but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

BrantleyLake: The main entrance to the park has reopened. Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. Fishing this past week was very good for anglers fishing near the dam and at the north end of the lake. They caught and released large numbers of largemouth bass in the 12- to 14-inch range and one that weighed in at 6 pounds. They were using crank baits, jigs, tubes and jerk baits. Anglers using the crank baits and jerk baits also reported catching and releasing a large number of white bass.

ChaparralParkLake: Fishing was good using liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

ElRitoCreek: Fishing was fair using worms, grasshoppers and bead-head hares’ ears for trout.

EuniceLake: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, liver, stink baits and hot dogs for catfish.

GreenMeadowLake: Fishing was good using liver and dough bait for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using spinner baits, tubes and chatter baits for largemouth bass. Darrell Carr of Ruidoso caught several bass here this past Saturday. He was using a green and white chatter bait, a chartreuse spinner bait and black tubes.

GreeneAcresLake: Fishing was fair to good using hot dogs, night crawlers, homemade dough bait and liver for catfish.

GrindstoneReservoir: Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

JalLake: Fishing was fair to good using liver and dough baits for catfish.

LakeVan: Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs, liver and stink baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

OasisParkLake: Fishing was slow to fair using homemade dough baits and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

PecosRiver: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 85 cfs. Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using chicken liver, stink baits and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.

PerchLake: Fishing was fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

RuidosoRiver: Stream flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 52 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SantaRosaLake: Fishing was slow to fair using homemade dough baits, chicken liver and stink baits for catfish. Fishing for all other species was sporadic at best with just an occasional walleye, crappie and smallmouth bass caught by anglers using crank baits.

SumnerLake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Northwest

AbiquiuLake: Fishing was fair to good using tubes, chigger craws, jerk baits and spinner baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was slow but there were a few caught by anglers trolling crank baits. We had no reports on other species.

AnimasRiver: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 1,240 cfs. Fishing for trout was slow.

BluewaterLake: Fishing was good using crank baits, spinner baits, jerk baits and swim baits for tiger musky. Preston Saunders of Albuquerque caught and released 26 tiger musky this past week. He was trolling jointed Rapalas. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the low 60s. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

CanjilonLakes: Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, Power Bait, spinners and worms. Fishing pressure was light.

ChamaRiver: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 265 cfs and 261 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using salmon eggs, night crawlers, spinners, wooly buggers, bead-head pheasant tails and copper John Barrs for a mixed bag of rainbow and brown trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

CochitiLake: Fishing was slow to fair using jigs and tubes for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

ElVadoLake: Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species.

FentonLake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes and yellow and orange garlic scented Power Bait from the bank and from boats.

HeronLake: We had no reports from anglers this week. All boat ramps have been closed due to low water conditions. Small boats, canoes and kayaks may still be used. Possession of kokanee is not permitted here or on Willow Creek during the closed season, which runs from Oct.1 through Nov.13.

JemezWaters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 13 cfs. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla was good using small hopper fly patterns, grasshoppers, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Jemez was good for anglers using worms, grasshoppers and copper John Barrs. Fishing on the Rio Las Vacas was slow to fair using small bead-head nymphs. We had no reports from other Jemez waters.

LagunaDelCampo: Fishing was good using worms, Gulp eggs and Power Bait for trout.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using tubes, worms, crank baits and jerk baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, spinner baits and jerk baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 70s.

SanJuanRiver: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 344 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair to good using zebra midges, foam wing emergers, dead chickens, San Juan worms, parachute Adams and small bead-head pheasant tails. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using jerk baits, night crawlers and wooly buggers.

SantaCruzLake: The lake will close to boating from Oct. 1 through mid-July of 2015. The only fishing access will be from the overlook, which will remain open. The Bureau of Land Management will be renovating the north lake campground, boat launch, picnic area and main access road.

SevenSpringsBroodPond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and small wet flies.

TingleyBeach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was slow to fair using hot dogs, chicken liver, homemade dough baits and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was slow.

TroutLakes: Fishing was fair using worms, wooly buggers and spinners for trout

Southwest

BearCanyon: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BillEvansLake: Fishing was slow for all species.

CaballoLake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and minnows near the dam for a mixed bag of walleye and white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, chicken liver and stink baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

ElephantButteLake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, spinners, spoons and minnows for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using crank baits, tubes and jigs. Fishing was fair using chicken liver, beef liver, homemade dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. Len Lo Presto of Las Cruces caught eight crappie and eight catfish in one 11-hour stretch this past week. He used Berkley Gulp minnows for the crappie and beef liver for the catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

EscondidaLake: Fishing was slow to fair using liver, homemade dough baits and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

GilaRiver: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 1,030 cfs. Heavy rains and high water kept anglers away again this past week. We had no reports.

PerchaDam: Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 24 cfs. Fishing was good using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

SnowLake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs for trout.

YoungPond: Fishing was good using liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
