LSC-leading Rambelles top Zias

Staff report

PORTALES — Lone Star Conference-leading Angelo State led virtually all the way Friday night and the Rambelles handed Eastern New Mexico University a 25-17, 25-18, 25-22 volleyball loss at Greyhound Arena.

The Zias (5-6, 1-3 LSC) led briefly 2-1 on a kill by senior outside hitter Lindsey Barron at the start of the first set before the Rambelles (10-1, 5-0) quickly took control. ASU piled up 49 kills in the match, led by 15 from Brianna Sotello and 13 from Mallory Blauser.

Angelo led the entire second set before the Zias tried to make a match of it in the third.

Senior Karra Day’s back-to-back aces capped a 5-0 run that put ENMU in front 11-5, and senior middle blocker Bree Lucero and junior outside hitter Talaitupu Faumui made it 13-7 with a combined block before the Rambelles went on an 11-3 run to grab a 16-14 lead.

The Zias rode kills from junior outside hitter Lauren Frye to go back in front 21-18, but managed only one point the rest of the way.

ASU setter Alexa Johnson posted a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs. Meantime, ENMU got seven kills apiece from Frye and Barron and a match-high 20 digs from sophomore libero Lindsay Bost, while Lucero tied a career-best with seven total blocks.

Senior setter Kennedi Catano had 14 assists in the match, moving her into fourth place on the ENMU career list with 2,177 assists.

The Zias are back in action at 7 p.m. today, hosting another rugged LSC opponent in Tarleton State.
