Greyhounds sophomore forward Ryan McManus, center, clashes with two Newman defenders as he attempts a shot during the second half of Thursday’s men’s soccer match at the ENMU pitch. The Jets posted a 6-1 win, dropping the Hounds to 1-5-1 for the season.
Newman’s Vitor Okamoto beat the ENMU defense and fired on goal, but ENMU freshman goalkeeper Andreas Ahlberg was able to turn it away with a diving save. Rossi was there for the rebound, though, and scored what turned out to be the final goal of the contest.
The Wichita, Kan.-based Jets (6-1-1) scored in the seventh minute off a header, a shot which Ahlberg deflected but bounced into the net anyway. ENMU (1-5-1) tied it six minutes later when sophomore midfielder Jose Hernandez was deflected by NU keeper Calum Dillon, only to have senior midfielder Abeynah Crosby follow up for the tying goal.
The Hounds wrap up a three-match homestand on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start against Oklahoma Christian.
