Eastern New Mexico University in Portales is honoring three educators who earned degrees from ENMU and have achieved impressive careers in education at the ENMU Educators Hall of Honor Gala 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Campus Union Ballroom as part of homecoming activities.

The honorees are:

Alma “Nell” Lewis

Lewis earned both bachelor and master’s degrees from ENMU.

She spent 20 years serving students in the Lovington Municipal Schools as a special education, school counselor and educational diagnostician.

Her work moved beyond mere service to affecting students’ lives and their perceptions of their potential.

A former student who is now a principal wrote, “… She made me believe I could learn … I remember finally liking school … (she believed) that I had a future.”

Joseph C. Bowman

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from ENMU, Bowman went on to obtain advanced degrees from the University of New Mexico and University of South Carolina-Columbia.

He achieved the pinnacle rank of distinguished full professor at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

Considered the architect of the athletic program at USCU, he served in a number of roles as teacher, coach and administrator over his 40-year career at that institution.

Colleagues speak warmly regarding his emphasis on teaching, student success and dedication to volunteerism.

Gay Sue Pinnell

Pinnell earned her undergraduate degree at ENMU before earning advanced degrees in reading education at The Ohio State University.

Her passion for reading research and pedagogy has resulted in a profusion of publications focused on supporting teachers and students in literacy development.

She was instrumental in bringing Reading Recovery to the United States and has devoted herself to supporting its expansion.

Pinnell has received numerous awards from professional organizations and the state of Ohio.
