Hilltoppers edge Hounds with late goal

Staff report

Seemingly headed for overtime, St. Edward’s broke through for a goal with just over three minutes left on Monday to defeat Eastern New Mexico University 1-0 at the ENMU pitch.

The Hilltoppers’ Andrew Fox scored the goal off a free kick when he tapped in a loose ball in front of the net at the 86:50 mark.

It marked the third 1-0 loss of the season for the Greyhounds (1-4-1).

ENMU had three good scoring opportunities in the first half, but shots by senior midfielder Abayneh Crosby and freshman midfielder Issak Arrieta were saved by Toppers keeper Kevin Leib while a header by sophomore midfielder Jose Hernandez sailed high.

St. Ed’s (4-2) had two quick chances to score in the 27th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Andreas Ahlberg made a save against Fox while a rebound shot by Primo Covarrubias hit the outside of the post.

Two shots from the top of the box by ENMU freshman midfielder Daniel Sanchez were blocked by Toppers defenders.

ENMU plays twice more at home this week, taking on Newman at 4 p.m. on Thursday and Oklahoma Christian at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
