Lady Cats finish fourth in Zia Classic

Staff report

ROSWELL — Clovis High’s volleyball team couldn’t get going with an early start on Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats were beaten by Roswell High 25-11, 25-11, 25-13 in the semifinals of the eight-team Zia Classic, then lost in the third-place match to Espanola Valley 25-19, 25-18, 25-13.

“Starting off very early on Saturday against a good Roswell High team, it was almost like we didn’t get off the bus,” Lady Cats coach Gabe Apodaca said. “I don’t think (the Lady Coyotes) are as good as (city rival) Goddard, but they’re very athletic.”

Senior Shaylee Warner had six kills and senior Dakota Grummer collected 11 assists in the semifinal matchup.

The Lady Cats (2-4) stayed with Espanola Valley most of the way. Senior Danni Williams had 10 kills and Grummer posted 20 assists in that one, while Sarah Bullard and Rylie Lee each had 10 digs.

“I think we matched up a little better against Espanola Valley,” Apodaca said. “They’re not a very big team, but they dug the ball very well.”

In Friday’s quarterfinal win over District 6-4A rival Carlsbad, Williams had 13 kills, three blocks and seven aces, while Warner had 10 kills and Grummer collected 36 assists and six aces.

The Lady Cats won their pool play with a 5-1 record, sweeping two games from both Capital and the Goddard junior varsity and splitting sets with the Lubbock Titans.

Clovis returns to action on Tuesday with a 6:15 p.m. (MDT) matchup at Amarillo Tascosa.
