Friday area prep football capsules — Sept. 12

Logan (2-0) at Dora (1-1)

• When: 7 p.m. today

• Last week: The Coyotes won at Mescalero 40-32. The Longhorns won at Gateway Christian 55-30.

• Last year: The teams did not meet.

• Of note: Tonight will mark the first night home game in Dora’s seven-year football history. Lighting was being completed this week, Coyotes coach Mason McBee said. … McBee said he was able to scout the Longhorns’ season opener, a 54-16 drubbing of Tatum at Logan. “They’re a good team,” he said. “I feel they’re going to be one of the top teams (in 8-man) when it’s all said and done.” … Senior QB Wyatt Strand ran for three touchdowns and threw for five at Gateway, and leads the way for the Longhorns. “They’ve got pretty good athletes across the board,” McBee said, adding that Logan could challenge teams like Melrose and Magdalena at the top of the division. … Dora, playing in 8-man after spending the last four seasons in 6-man, is close to hitting its stride. “I feel like we’re about to possibly take off here pretty soon,” McBee said. “We’re only one or two blocks away from springing some things.”.

Floyd (2-0) at Hondo (2-0)

• When: 6 p.m. today

• Last week: The Broncos posted a 40-13 win at Vaughn, while Hondo routed San Jon/Grady 76-22. The Broncos have dominated their first two opponents to the tune of 95-31 while the Eagles have outscored their first two foes 140-35.

• Last year: The teams have never met.

• Of note: The Broncos are off to a great start, but face a big test this week. Hondo won the 6-man championship in 2012 and lost in the finals to Lake Arthur last season. “Right now, in my mind they’re the no. 1 team in the state,” Broncos coach Steve Foust said. “ It’ll be a great challenge, and a great opportunity, for us.” … The top player for the Eagles is senior QB/DB Billy Candelaria. … Foust said he isn’t totally surprised by his team’s start, coming off a 1-4 record last year. “I thought we’d be pretty good,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of good senior leadership.”
