Zias drop pair in WT tourney

CANYON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team finished 1-3 in the season-opening Lady Buff Classic, losing a pair of four-setters on Saturday.

The Zias were beaten by Adams State 25-18, 10-25, 26-24, 25-16 before dropping an evening matchup with New Mexico Highlands 25-21,20-25, 25-13, 25-20.

Adams State, winning for the first time in three outings, took control against the Zias by rallying from a six-point deficit later in the third set, scoring 11 of the final 14 points.

Lindsey Stindt had 13 kills and nine digs for the Grizzlies, while sophomore Courtney Lawson posted a double-double for ENMU with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Highlands (2-2) overcame an early six-point deficit in Game 1, but ENMU came back to even the match, taking the second set with a finishing 8-2 run.

The Cowgirls trailed by three before finishing the third set with a 10-2 run, then used a 7-0 surge to open a 15-7 lead and walk away in the final set.

Alicia Moreno had 17 kills and 13 digs and Andrea Nunez added 12 kills for Highlands. The Zias got 11 digs from senior outside hitter Lindsey Barron and 10 from sophomore outside hitter Lauren Frye.
