Perea scores twice, Rams earn first win

Staff report

MORIARTY — Portales High’s boys were sure glad to see that first goal go in the net on Tuesday.

After failing to score in the first two matches of the season, including a scoreless tie at Clovis, sophomore Pedro Perea put the Rams on the board twice in the first 11 minutes as PHS posted a 3-1 win over Moriarty.

Perea also assisted on an insurance goal by Saul Fernandez late in the match.

The PHS girls, meantime, scored twice late in the half and went on to a 2-0 win over the Lady Pintos.

“He’s been working hard,” Rams coach Nathan Dodge said of Perea. “He didn’t play very much (on varsity) last year, but he’s gotten way better this summer. You could tell its paying off.”

The Rams put 16 shots on goal in the match. Moriarty’s Nester Lugo kept his team in contention, though, with 13 saves.

“We played really well in the first half,” Dodge said. “We possessed the ball probably 75 or 80 percent of the time.”

He said the team picked up again after the Pintos (0-3) scored midway through the second half.

The Lady Rams (2-3) got first-half goals from sisters Angie and Alejandra Gonzalez and outshot the Lady Pintos (1-3) 12-0.

“We’ve been working on some things defensively, and this was a good game to start putting them into play,” coach Sara Vasquez said.

Both PHS squads host Clovis in their next outings. The boys play at 5 p.m. on Thursday and the girls at noon on Saturday.
