Lobo women stay perfect in Italy

Staff report

PESARO, Italy — The University of New Mexico stayed perfect on its Italy tour Saturday, notching a 70-54 win over the Adriatic Sea Sirens.

Junior Brea Mitchell hit four 3-pointers as part of her game-high 16 points in the win at Pesaro, Italy.

Clovis native Antiesha Brown poured in 13 points and nine rebounds for UNM, which led 15-4 early and led by as many as 18 in the second half after the Sea Sirens cut the deficit to 36-32 at halftime.

UNM beat AS Vicenza 74-37 Thursday.

“We played well,” UNM coach Yvonne Sanchez said. “We got out to a much quicker start (than on Thursday), and our starters did a great job. We put different combinations in, and our big lead dissipated, which isn’t surprising with the combinations we were playing. But overall, I was really pleased.”

The game was played under FIBA rules, with four 10-minute quarters and a 24-second shot clock.

The Lobos had a drawn-out trip to the 6 p.m. (10 a.m. MDT) game. The team left Venice at 8:30 a.m., took speed boats to Pesaro and ran into a traffic jam. The jam invoked a mandated travel break, which required the team wait at a local store for 30 minutes.

Also, the delay kicked in a law in Italy stating that any driver getting paid to transport patrons for more than a certain time period must take a certain amount of rest time. The Lobos had to wait at a convenience super store by the highway for a half-hour.

UNM will face the Netherlands national team in a 6:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. MDT) Tuesday matchup. The teams will face off again Wednesday, with the Lobos departing Thursday morning.
