Fishing report — Aug. 7

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and spinners. Fishing for perch was fair using worms.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest Monday was 5.9cfs. Trout was good using bead head hares ears, PMDs, yellow sallies, micro mays, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using Pistol Petes and salmon eggs.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing at night was slow to fair using chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow to fair using top water lures and jerk baits. A few white bass were caught by anglers trolling crank baits. We had no reports on other species.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was slow to fair trolling Platte River specials for rainbow trout and an occasional kokanee. Fishing was very good using worms for perch. Fishing was slow to fair using spoons and spinners for northern pike. Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: Trout fishing was slow.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, hoppers, homemade dough bait and Power Bait.

Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using spinners, Pistol Petes and worms.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was slow.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos Monday was 74cfs. Trout fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, salmon eggs and a wide assortment of flies. Richard Burrows fished here last week and reported tough conditions with some areas blown out and other just not too productive. The fish were few and far between but he did manage to catch some brown trout between Terrero and Cowles. He was using royal humpys and dark caddis. The area between Pecos and Villanueva was recently stocked with catfish but we had no reports of catches this past weekend.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery Monday was 126cfs. Rains over the weekend made for tough fishing. Anglers using night crawlers caught a few trout. We had no reports from the hatchery pond.

Rio Costilla: Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 30cfs. Trout fishing was good using PMDs, royal stimulators, bead head hares ears.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge Monday was 595cfs. The waters turned murky over the weekend from all the runoff. Fishing was slow.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez Monday was 25cfs. Fishing on the upper Hondo was very good using PMDs and comparaduns.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero Monday was 15cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco Monday was 19cfs. Fishing was good using stimulators, bead head hares ears, night crawlers and salmon eggs.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: The water level is extremely low and the pH level is high. The ponds are not being stocked at present.

Springer Lake: Fishing was fair using cut bait and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Ute Lake: Fishing was fair to good using slab spoons and deep running crank baits for white bass. Anglers did best working at a depth of 15 feet over 30 feet of water. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow although there were numerous small bass caught by anglers using chug bugs, Ricos, buzz baits and jerk baits. Fishing for bluegill was good using worms. Fishing for catfish picked up for a couple of days when runoff was coming in to Ute Creek but it has since tapered off. The surface water temp was in the middle 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair to good using cone head wooly buggers and imitation crawdads for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair trolling spinner night crawler rigs over the flats for walleye. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec Monday morning was 570cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing slowed this past week but there were a few small tiger musky caught by anglers using crank baits, top water lures and swim baits. We had no reports on other species. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Fishing on the upper lake was good using spinners salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 295cfs and 141cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair to good using Pistol Petes, bead head hares ears, Rapalas, night crawlers and Power Bait for a mix of brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow. Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits for white bass and an occasional smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. There is still plenty of water for launching boats at the park ramp. This one might be worth a try for trolling for trout and kokanee.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was very slow. A heavy growth of moss has spread across most of the lake.

Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 53cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was slow. Fishing on the Cebolla was fair using worms and elk hair caddis. We had no reports on other streams in the area.

Laguna Del Campo: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and spinners.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using top water lures, jerk baits, swim baits and curly tail grubs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair trolling Arnies, Z Rays and Cripplures tipped with corn for kokanee. Anglers using Power Bait and night crawlers caught a few rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan: Water flow below Navajo Monday was 705cfs.Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair to good using RS2s, Johnny Flashes Griffith’s gnats, red larva and foam wing emergers. Fishing through the bait waters was good using jerk baits, Gulp eggs, wooly buggers, night crawlers and Power Bait.

Santa Cruz Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Trout fishing was very good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth Pond and Central Pond was good using shrimp, worms, homemade dough bait and liver for catfish. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was slow.

Trout Lakes: Fishing was good using elk hair caddis and BWOs for trout.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. There were a few catfish caught by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

Elephant Butte Lake: Night fishing continued to be quite good using shiners, shrimp, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using top water lures jerk baits, crank baits and grubs for a mix of white bass and largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers, shrimp and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 420cfs. Fishing was slow.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: Fishing was good using night crawlers for catfish and minnows and grubs for walleye.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, spinners, Pistol Petes and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte Monday was 1,080cfs. Fishing was very good using dead shiners and night crawlers under a bobber for catfish. Fishing below Caballo Lake was fair to good using minnows and curly tail grubs for walleye and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga Monday was 4.1cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and chicken liver for catfish.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was fair to good using night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was good using worms for catfish.

Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was fair to good using hot dogs, night crawlers and liver for catfish.

Grindstone Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jal Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The recently stocked catfish didn’t cooperate with the anglers over the weekend.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake Monday was 609cfs. The fishing area below Sumner Lake is closed due to high water release. Fishing downstream was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and chicken liver for catfish.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood Monday was 25cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
