With the season just around the corner, Eastern New Mexico University is looking for a men’s soccer coach.

Harold Munoz, who has been the Greyhounds’ coach for the past six seasons, has resigned the position to move to Macon, Ga., with wife Natalie and their two sons. He said his wife has family living in the Macon area.

“It’s mostly due to family (reasons),” Munoz, 36, said Monday. “I’ll be coaching club soccer, and be volunteering (as a women’s assistant coach) at Mercer University,” a Division I program in Macon.

ENMU athletic director Jeff Geiser said he has an interim coach in mind to replace Munoz, a native of Bogota, Colombia, who posted a 53-40-16 record at ENMU and led the Hounds to the Lone Star Conference championship in 2011.

Prior to that, he served as a graduate assistant for the Hounds in 2005 and 2006 under then-coach Carlos Elizondo while obtaining a Master’s degree in sports administration. He then spent a year as the women’s soccer coach at Midland Lutheran College before taking over the ENMU men’s program in 2008.

Geiser, who noted Munoz was currently the longest-tenured coach at ENMU, said the school would eventually open the position to a search for a full-time coach.

“The timing isn’t the best, but we totally understand these situations,” Geiser said. “There’s no hard feelings towards Harold. I totally get it.

“I hope to name (an interim) replacement in the next day or two; there should be an announcement forthcoming.”

ENMU, playing as an independent last season after only three programs remained in the LSC, posted a 9-5-4 record. The Hounds will play as an independent again this season.

“I’m a little bit sad to go because I think we have a good team coming in,” he said. “But I’d like to thank the community for supporting us. I had a wonderful time.”
