Five county 4-H teams place in top 5 at state

While giving his retiring address last week at the State 4-H Conference held at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, Koby Cone told the story of wondering what was behind some mountains.

Behind those mountains were larger mountains, which Cone explained that when one goal is accomplished a bigger goal is in the distance.

Ending his year as 4-H state treasure, Cone accomplished his goal and now will be seeking another.

Cone and Lane Wallace, the state president, both put away their green jackets as they retired as state officers.

Cone, from Dora, said this conference was a different experience than years previous as he could only enter one competition and he was behind the scenes of the conference.

“It was a really good time, I got to work behind the scenes of a conference as a state officer,” Cone said.

It was a bitter sweet time for Cone as it was his last 4-H event as he will be going to college in Kansas.

Cone said he will miss the family environment that the Roosevelt County 4-H had.

“I will miss the family atmosphere that we have. New kids always come in, but it doesn’t matter because they are automatically accepted,” Cone said.

Some of the new members help represent the county at the conference as five out of seven teams placed in the top five and five individuals made the top five in their contests.

Some of the contests the group participated in were livestock skillathon, horticulture and land judging.

Connie Moyers, Roosevelt County program director, said one of the teams she taught had three out of four team members that have never judged before and they got third at state

“It is a great learning experience for the kids. They develop friendships with kids across the state. They learn about themselves and what they are capable of,” Moyers said.

Here are the results of the judging contests:

Horticulture team

• 3rd place with Taylyr Davis, Micah Friend, Lanette Valero and Cinnamon Varnell.

Land team

• 2nd place with Kenzee Criswell, Vince Gardner and Jace Wallace.

Land individuals

• 3rd place Jace Wallace.

Livestock team (Roosevelt County had two teams)

• 2nd place, Mikaela Cone, Kynzi Creighton and Kenzee Criswell.

Livestock individual

• 5th place Kasyn Creighton.

• 3rd place Mikaela Cone.

Prepared public speaking

• 2nd place Kynzi Creighton.

Favorite Foods

• 5th place Cinnamon Varnell.

Livestock skillathon (Roosevelt County had two teams)

• 4th place, Mikaela Cone, Koby Cone, Kynzi Creighton and Kenzee Criswell.

Roosevelt County also had a Horticulture Skillathon team, but they did not place.
