Cooler temperatures short-lived

Staff report

Gray skies and sprinkles of rain created light-jacket weather on Thursday. With Thursday’s cold front, high temperatures didn’t reach much further than the day’s low temperatures in eastern New Mexico, according to Accuweather.com meteorologist Brian Edwards.

Thursday’s morning low temperature was about 63 degrees, what Edwards said is about normal for the Clovis and Portales area during this time of year. But temperatures didn’t climb much further as the high for the day was 73 degrees.

“So that’s a good 18 degrees below normal. It’s very significant,” Edwards said. “There’s a cold front that went through the area that is currently sitting over central Texas...That brought the clouds and cooler temperatures. You had a lot of clouds (Thursday) so it kept temperatures down.”

Edwards hopes people enjoyed the respite from the hot weather as temperatures warm back up today and continue into next week. He predicts triple-digit weather to strike Sunday through Tuesday.

“High pressure over the southwest will provide you that nice heat wave, which will be above normal,” Edwards said.
