Area pair hoping for short round at high school finals

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — The first round of the National High School Finals Rodeo was completed Wednesday morning in Rock Springs, with a pair of eastern New Mexico competitors have positioning themselves for a chance to advance to Saturday's short round.
Dora senior Joshua Walker posted a time of 9.44 seconds in calf roping, good for fifth place.
Elida’s Hunter Haley is in the mix too, with a time of 7.88 seconds in goat tying. That is good for 11th place at the end of the first round.
The top 20 competitors in each event — based on their two-round average score or time — will advance to the short round.
The second round began Wednesday night and will continue through Saturday morning. All events are at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs.
Haley, who also made the finals as a sophomore, is on the outside of the short round for breakaway roping. She roped a time of 2.97 seconds, putting her 28th overall.
Abby Medlin of Tatum, the state champion, leads the field with a time of 2.29 seconds. She is third in all-around cowgirl standings, with Edgewood’s LeighAnn Scribner in sixth.
First-round winners came from eight states and two Canadian provinces.
