Fishing report — July 10

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using salmon peach and orange Power Bait, Gulp eggs and worms for trout. We had no reports on perch.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 41 cfs. Before the flow increase, trout fishing was good using bead-head hares ears, pheasant tails, worms, spinners and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using Power Bait, spinners, Pistol Petes and elk hair caddis.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair using yellow Power Bait for rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair using topwater lures, jerk baits, chatter baits and tubes for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, spinner-minnow combinations and leeches for walleye. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms, bead-head prince nymphs and elk hair caddis.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair to good trolling Arnies and Panther Martins tipped with corn at 20 to 25 feet for kokanee. Fishing was fair using Power Bait from anchored boats for trout. Fishing was fair using worms for perch. We had no reports on northern pike.

Hopewell Lake: Fishing was good for rainbow trout on Pistol Petes.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, Power Bait and a wide assortment of flies for trout up to 20 inches. The best action is in the early morning and evening hours.

Los Pinos: Fishing was good using bead-head hares ears, leech patterns, worms and San Juan worms for a mixed bag of browns and rainbows.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, worms and spinners for trout.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, Gulp eggs, Power Bait and worms for trout.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, BWOs, hoppers, Panther Martins, Power Bait and worms. The boat ramp remains closed due to low water conditions.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 47 cfs. Trout fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, bead-head hares ears, bead-head prince nymphs, elk hair caddis and night crawlers.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 77 cfs and the water was clearing. Fishing near the hatchery was fair drifting night crawlers and was very good using elk hair caddis, Power Bait, night crawlers and salmon eggs for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing at the hatchery pond was excellent using Power Bait, salmon eggs and small flies.

Rio Costilla: Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 54 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 633 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using bead-head hares ears, BWOs, large attractor patterns and night crawlers for trout. Fishing from Albuquerque through the Socorro area was fair to good using night crawlers, liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 31 cfs. Fishing was very good using elk hair caddis, Royal humpys, parachute adams, BWOs and bead-head hares ears.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 7.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 12 cfs. Donnie Valdez hit this one again this past week and had great luck using bead-head hares ears, bead-head pheasant tails and his own Sweet Bee pattern. Other anglers reported great success using the hares ears, prince nymphs and stimulators.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was good using night crawlers and Power Bait for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish.

Ute Lake: The walleye moved deeper this past week with the best baits being live minnows and leeches fished at 25 to 30 feet. Largemouth bass were hitting top water early and late in the day while the best smallmouth action was with plastics at 8 to 12 feet. Fishing was very good using night crawlers for bluegill just about anywhere on the lake. Crank baits that run about 10 to 12 feet deep worked best for the white bass. Fishing for catfish was sporadic with just a few caught by anglers using chicken liver, beef liver and night crawlers. Fishing for crappie was slow. The surface water temp was in the mid to high 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using yellow and green spinners tipped with night crawlers for walleye. The best reports came from anglers fishing close to dropoffs and running the baits just off the bottom. Anglers using jigs tipped with chartreuse night crawlers did well in the same areas. Fishing was slow to fair using topwater lures, jerk baits and tubes for smallmouth bass. Most of the bass were small. A few catfish were caught by anglers using liver and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 768 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs and topwater lures for tiger musky. Anglers having the best luck were using water dogs, buzz baits and other topwater lures but there were a few caught by anglers using hot dogs. Fishing for catfish was slow Last Wednesday Dave Wright and Mike Sistok of Roswell caught and released 18 tiger musky, most of which were in the 32- to 34-inch range. Fishing for trout was slow. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was very good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, parachute adams and spinners for trout.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 598 cfs and 321 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was very good using Rapalas, Panther Martins, night crawlers and bead-head hares ears for a mix of brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using spinners, jerk baits, topwater lures and crank baits for a mixed bag of northern pike, white bass and smallmouth bass. The topwater lures were working best in the early morning hours. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using worms for bluegill and an occasional perch. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was slow.

Heron Lake: Fishing for lake trout and kokanee was slow. Anglers fishing from canoes and kayaks caught several rainbow trout. They were using rainbow colored Panther Martins.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 10 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was fair using elk hair caddis and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other streams in the area.

Laguna Del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait for trout. We had reports on other species.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, senkos, curly tail grubs, small plastic worms and topwater lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing for kokanee was fair to good trolling green Arnies and Z Rays tipped with corn at 25 to 35 feet. Three generations of the Ferguson family had a great time here last Wednesday as Kevin, his son Brandon and Brandon’s son Eric caught quite a mixed bag. It included carp, bass, crappie and kokanee. Most of the bass were caught on curly tail grubs while the kokanee were hitting green Arnies tipped with corn at about 30 feet. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to upper 60s.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 399 cfs.Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using red and orange larvae, red San Juan worms, small black and olive streamers, ants and small bead-head pheasant tails. Fishing through the bait waters was good using worms, salmon eggs, Gulp eggs, pins minnows and copper John Barrs under a Chernobyl ant.

Santa Cruz Lake: Fishing was fair trolling Fisher Chick and Panther Martin spinners for trout. A few were also caught by anglers using Power Bait.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using salmon eggs, hoppers, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Central and Youth ponds was very good using hot dogs, night crawlers and homemade dough baits for catfish. A few largemouth bass were caught by anglers using night crawlers and small crank baits. We had no reports on other species or from the Catch and Release Pond.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. A few catfish were caught by anglers fishing from the bank and using night crawlers and liver. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair using chatter baits, jerk baits and topwater lures for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. A few were also caught by anglers using tubes and lizards. Fishing was fair using worms and small tubes for bluegill. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. The surface temp was in the mid to upper 70s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair to good using night crawlers, hot dogs and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 32 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: Fishing was slow for all species.

Quemado Lake: Fishing for trout was a bit slow but there were a few limits of fish caught by anglers using worms. Fishing for tiger musky was slow.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 2,090 cfs. Fishing was good using night crawlers, hot dogs, shrimp and liver for catfish. A few walleye were caught by anglers using night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was good using ham, hot dogs, night crawlers and homemade baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 14 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using night crawlers, chicken liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bottomless Lakes: The main entrance to the park has reopened. We had no reports from anglers.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was slow to fair using parachute adams, worms and Power Bait for trout.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms, liver, hot dogs and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jal Lake: Fishing was fair using liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, night crawlers and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was good using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 76 cfs. Fishing below Sumner Lake was slow but farther downstream anglers did well using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 5.3 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Sumner Lake: Fishing continued to be quite slow for all species
