Portales missed out on a large rain Wednesday as the area received around 1 to 2 inches of precipitation yet Clovis was reported to have 4 to 5 inches of rain according to the National Weather Service.

Jason Frazier, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, said Portales only received 1.1 inches of rain on Wednesday.

Some places around Portales flooded more than others after Wednesday’s thunderstorm, including the intersection of North Main and West Railroad. According to Roosevelt County Emergency Management Director Keith Wattenbarger, 18th Street was flooded in the early morning and signs were up warning drivers.

Though smaller in comparison to the precipitation in other areas, the rain Portales did receive will help the area stay green said Roosevelt County Emergency Management Director Keith Wattenbarger.

Wattenbarger said he was up around 4 a.m. and saw that 18th Street was flooded and a sign was up to caution drivers. Later in the day the water receded.

“We missed the big rain,” Wattenbarger said. “We had no major issue due to rain anywhere in the county.”

From June data, Portales is at 80 percent of normal precipitation according to Frazier.

“What this means is that it is close to average, but not quite average,” said Frazier. “If the area gets more rain, we could see it going to closer to normal or above normal.”

According to Accuweather.com Meteorologist Brian Edwards, more rain is possible on Thursday and Friday.

“There is a chance of pop up thunderstorms on Thursday with a high of 88 degrees and Friday will warm up more with a high of 92 degrees and a chance of more thunderstorms will be in the evening,” Edwards said.

Thursday will have a 30 percent chance of precipitation and Friday will have a 20 percent according to Edwards.
