ENMU alumnus steps up at RGH

Greg McFarland, a former Eastern New Mexico University basketball player, is making slam-dunks for Roosevelt General Hospital in the marketing department. The ENMU alumnus has been with RGH for six months and is stepping up to help while Amber Hamilton, RGH Liaison, is on leave.

Where are you from?

I am originally from Riverside, California. I came out to Portales three years ago to play basketball for ENMU.

How was it adjusting to small town life?

When I first got here it was quite the culture shock, coming from a suburb of Los Angeles. I was not used to so many people obeying the speed limit. It took some time adjusting to a country atmosphere, but now I feel much more acclimated and I have been told that I am now a poor to mediocre two-stepper.

You started out as an intern for RGH. How was the transition from intern to marketing specialist?

It was a quick learning curve, but due to the six-month internship under Amber’s guidance, I have been able to rise to the level of expectation needed to do the job.

What is your favorite project that you have gotten to work on for RGH?

Since working here we have started the behavioral health and substance abuse program. This is an echo program that we partnered with through University of New Mexico. It is my favorite because I think it’s an under served need in this area.

What drives and inspires you?

Competition. I get the drive to be better through fierce competition. I believe I excel the most when competing.

What are your plans for the future?

The immediate future plans are to continue my education in the graduate program for communication at ENMU. I’d like to continue marketing and eventually go back to the city life.
