Interior designer Kimball Starr is going to explain the tools you can use to change how you perceive the shape of a room’s interior as well as change lighting, pattern and color. Her business is Kimball Starr Interior Design in San Francisco.

Marisa Pawelko is a designer and events coordinator, and she represents Westcott Brand Cutting Tools, Imagine Crafts and Tsukineko Inks. She’s going to demonstrate how to create a quick and easy T-shirt scarf using various cutting tools. The scarf can be embellished and customized in several ways. She’s from Winfield, Illinois.
Designer and digitizer, Laura Waterfield is the owner of Laura’s Sewing Studio, and she s going to demonstrate insertion lace machine embroidery which creates an heirloom design that can be done on most fabrics. The secret to this technique is to use a wing needle. She lives in Tomball, Texas.
Information on “boil-in-a-bag” rice, machine embroidery, and teenage dating violence will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” noon Tuesday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
Gloria Kohnen, Riviana Foods, Inc. in Houston will demonstrate how to use the original “boil-in-a-bag” rice to prepare some delicious recipes. Since rice is a complex carbohydrate, it’s a quick source of energy.
Sewing expert Kay Brooks will show how to embroider on areas that are hard to reach, such as collars, cuffs, and bags. She will also explain how to work with challenging fabrics, such as sweater knits, when doing machine embroidery. Her company is RNK Distributing in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Donna Mowrer is a judge with the Ninth Judicial District in Portales, and she’s going to talk about teenage dating violence. Without an understanding of healthy and unhealthy behaviors in dating relationships, teens are especially susceptible to becoming trapped in a cycle of dating violence.
Quick Italian chicken and rice
• 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1 Tbsp. olive oil
• 2 cans (14.5 oz. ea.) diced tomatoes with basil, garlic and oregano
• 3 bags (3.5 oz. ea.) Success White or Brown Rice
• 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded
• 2 cups chicken, cooked and diced
Prepare rice according to package directions. For three boil-in-bag packages, be sure to use a large enough saucepan to totally submerge each boil-in-bag. Combine mushrooms, garlic, and olive oil in large skillet; cook 3 minutes. Add undrained tomatoes; cook 3 minutes on medium-high heat. Stir in cooked rice, parmesan cheese, and chicken; heat through. Serves 4 to 6.
