Custom Classic set for this weekend
Staff report
More than 100 teams are slated to participate in this weekend’s 31st annual Plateau Custom Classic at Guy Leeder Complex.
Tournament director Roger Jackson said that while the field is limited to 115 teams, it appeared as of Monday that the final tally will be just short of that.
Five divisions will be contested, including men’s competitive, Class D and Class E and women’s Class C/D and Class E.
The tournament begins at 7 p.m. Friday night and will continue through until Sunday, except for short breaks during the early-morning hours. Championship games in all divisions are slated for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, with any “if necessary” contests in the double-elimination event set for 3:30 p.m.
Nearly half of the field (50 teams) was in men’s Class E, Jackson said, while the men’s competitive division had 10 teams and men’s Class D and both women’s divisions numbered 14 apiece. He said he anticipates a final count between 105 and 110.
Jackson said other tournaments in the region have also seen a drop in numbers, in part because of travel expense. “There aren’t as many travel teams that used to play,” he said.
This year’s field includes a couple of teams from Oklahoma. He said there aren’t quite as many from around New Mexico as usual, while west Texas entries are about the same as in years past.
