After several discussions on possible changes to the parking lot at Hillcrest Park and Zoo, the Parks, Recreation & Beautification Committee agreed during a meeting Monday afternoon at City Hall that it’s time to move forward with the plan.

The decision was unanimous.

City Engineer Justin Howalt said the changes to the parking lot will include closing off the south end of the lot to force traffic through the north end, and adding speed bumps.

Materials for the upgrade have been ordered, Howalt said, and he anticipates all work on the parking lot will be done in about six weeks.

The upgrade will not imply a closure, he said.

The state of disrepair of the Clovis Municipal par-3 golf course was also a major point of discussion.

“The course is in poor condition,” said Parks and Recreation Director Mark Dayhoff. He said the course never took to bent grass seeds, and that weeds were still growing in lumps.

Howalt said after the meeting that the area’s drought may have affected the golf course.

Commissioners Juan Garza and Robert Sandoval expressed concern about a promise they feel they made to their constituents that the par-3 course would be fixed and maintained.

Commissioner Tom Martin proposed coming up with an estimate on how much it would cost to improve the course.

Dayhoff said he would look into it.

Dayhoff said he was unsure if the issue of the golf course would be an agenda item during the next Park and Rec meeting.
