Fishing report — June 12

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait. Several people reported catching limits. A few trout were also caught by anglers using spinners. We had no report on perch.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 13 cfs. Trout fishing was good using orange stimulators, streamers, brassies, Cimarron specials, worms and salmon eggs. Donnie Valdez from Taos fished here this past week and reported fishing as excellent using orange stimulators and black and gray streamers when the fish were down. We had no reports from the Gravel Pit Lakes.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and spinners for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using worms for bullheads. Fishing for bass was slow but there was one report of a largemouth bass caught by an angler using a senko. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits, curly tail grubs and spinner-night crawler combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using chigger craws, senkos, tubes and worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using minnows and grubs for crappie. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was good using liver, dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was very good using, worms, salmon eggs and hoppers.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good trolling Arnies and Platte River specials on light line for kokanee. Fishing was fair using Power Bait and spinners for rainbow trout. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing for northern pike was slow.

Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was good for anglers using worms, Power Bait, damsel flies and dark colored wooly buggers.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was rated as good to excellent by anglers using Mepps spinners, Rooster Tails, Pistol Petes and salmon peach Power Bait. A few trout and some small perch were also caught by anglers using worms.

Los Pinos: Fishing was good using bead-head prince nymphs and worms for trout.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait for trout.

Maxwell Lake 13: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, garlic cheese, spinners and worms for fish up to 20 inches. We had no reports on other species.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was very good again this past week. Anglers did well using Power Bait, salmon eggs, hoppers, Panther Martin spinners, Kastmasters, Super Dupers, Pistol Petes and worms. The boat ramp remains closed due to low water conditions.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 145 cfs. Trout fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, stone fly nymphs, black streamers and prince nymphs.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 220 cfs. Fishing was slow with the high flows but should pick up in the next week or two.

Rio Costilla: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 735 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 105 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 38 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using night crawlers.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 75 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: Closed for the season. Opens July 1.

Springer Lake: Fishing was fair to good using large in-line spinners and live bait for northern pike. Fishing was fair to good using cut bait for catfish.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was very good using salmon peach Power Bait for trout. Fishing for catfish was slow.

Ute Lake: Fishing was very good using white grubs, jerk baits, crank baits and minnows and spinner-night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing was very good using worms and small grubs for bluegill. Fishing for crappie slowed but a few were caught by anglers using minnows and small jigs. Fishing was good trolling and casting Bombers and Flicker Shad for white bass. Fishing was good using jigs, tubes, senkos, creature baits and worms for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using liver, stink bait, night crawlers and dough bait for catfish. Kirby Horner, Steve Cruzan and Randy Chase were here last Saturday. They all caught limits of walleye and several white bass while using crank baits. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair to good using senkos, grubs, tubes and crank baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using spinner-night crawler combinations, Wally Divers, Flicker Shad and tubes for walleye. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 2,490 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair using spoons, large streamers and jerk baits for tiger musky. Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was very good using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 290 cfs and 596 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using Rapalas, night crawlers, salmon eggs and Power Bait for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using white Bombers and Wally Divers for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, grubs and Wally Divers for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using worms and small jigs under a bobber for bluegill. Fishing was slow to fair using creature baits, senkos and tubes for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair trolling countdown Rapalas for brown trout. Fishing was fair to good using worms and Power Bait near the dam for rainbow trout.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, hoppers, wooly buggers, Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs. The best fishing times were early and late in the day.

Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Four wheel drive was still recommended for launching at the primitive ramp.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 10 cfs.

Fishing was good using hoppers, beetles, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Cebolla was good using worms. We had no reports on the Rio Guadalupe. Fishing on the Valles Caldera was good again this past week on both the East Fork and San Antonio. Anglers did well using foam hoppers, ants, Griffith’s gnats and small streamers. Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, spinners and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, senkos, jerk baits, curly tail grubs, creature baits and jigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using jerk baits, crank baits and spinners for northern pike. Fishing was fair to good trolling the mouth of Francis Canyon with Arnies and Panther Martins tipped with corn at 30 to 35 feet for kokanee. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio: Trout fishing was slow.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 293 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using small dark midge patterns, black ants, small bead-head pheasant tails, hoppers and beetles. Fishing through the bait waters was good using small jerk baits, salmon eggs, wooly buggers, copper John Barrs and Chernobyl ants.

Santa Cruz Lake: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, Kastmasters, spinners, Rapalas, salmon eggs and worms. Anglers fishing from boats did better than those fishing from the bank.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using a variety of baits and flies. June 1, Elijah and Zachary Martinez of Santa Fe caught their limits of trout. They were using salmon eggs and parachute Adams.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was good using hot dogs, liver, homemade dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was slow to fair using hoppers and small midge patterns.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was fair to good using liver, night crawlers and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and Texas-rigged lizards for walleye and white bass. The best reports came from anglers fishing around the KOA area. Fishing was fair to good using worms and liver at the south end of the lake for catfish. A few crappie were caught by anglers using small minnows and worms. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits, Kastmasters and grubs for white bass. Fishing was good using tubes, senkos, craws, chatter baits and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using tubes and minnows for crappie. Fishing was good using stink bait, shrimp and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. The surface temp was in the mid to upper 70s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair to good using liver, night crawlers and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 38 cfs. Fishing for catfish on the lower Gila was fair using liver. We had no reports on trout.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: Fishing was slow for all species.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was good using spinners, salmon eggs, Power Bait and worms for trout. Fishing was fair to good using spoons, Power Bait and Mepps spinners for tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 2,860 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms under a bobber and Power Bait for trout. Jennifer and Tim Frey caught several trout here May 28. They were using worms under a bobber.

Young Pond: Fishing was fair using dough bait and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 11 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using worms and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing for trout was slow.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bottomless Lakes: The main entrance to the park has reopened. We had no reports from anglers.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week. The Seven Rivers Day Use area has reopened along with the boat ramp and shoreline access.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was good using homemade dough bait, liver and worms for catfish.

El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was good using night crawlers for catfish.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was good using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was fair using dough bait and stink bait for channel catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was slow to fair using spinners and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was fair using liver and dough bait for channel catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing for catfish was good to excellent using homemade dough bait and stink bait. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 86 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 3.2 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow. A youth fishing clinic will be held here June 14. For more information call the state park office at (575) 472-3110.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, craws, worms and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The east side boat ramp is closed.
