Fishing report — May 29

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was very good using salmon peach Power Bait for 17 to 21-inch fish. We had no report on perch.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 19 cfs. Trout fishing was good using micro mays, stone flies, brassies, Cimarron specials, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using Pistol Petes, Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was very good using garlic bait and assorted Power Bait from the band and Colorado spoons from boats for trout. Several limits were reported. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was good using night crawlers, homemade dough bait, liver and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was good using tubes, senkos, chigger craws, jerk baits and spinner baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using crank baits, minnows and spinner-night crawler combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using minnows, small tubes, and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was fair using crank baits for white bass.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs, copper John Barrs and small bead-head Prince nymphs.

Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good using assorted colors and flavors of Power Bait from the bank and from anchored boats for rainbow trout. Fishing for northern pike was slow. Fishing was fair to good trolling Arnies and Panther Martins for a mixed bag of rainbow trout and kokanee. A few perch were caught by anglers using worms. The main boat ramp is open and the boat docks are in place.

Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait and worms.

Lake Alice: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, worms, homemade dough bait and Pistol Petes.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was very good using salmon peach and garlic Power Bait, homemade dough bait, Pistol Petes, Kastmasters, Mepps spinners, wooly buggers and parachute Adams. Dana and Bob Pariza fished here on the 22nd and had a great time catching and releasing perch and trout. The perch were caught on Berkley Power worms and Mepps spinners and Pistol Petes were used for the trout.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using worms.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was fair using salmon peach Power Bait for trout.

Maxwell Lake 13: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, Panther Martin spinners, garlic cheese, wooly buggers, salmon eggs and worms. We had no reports on other species.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms, night crawlers, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms, wooly buggers, Kastmasters, Super Dupers, Panther Martins, Pistol Petes and parachute adams. The boat ramp remains closed due to low water conditions.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 193 cfs. Before the big rains, trout fishing was very good using bead-head prince nymphs, elk hair caddis, worms, Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 178 cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

Rio Costilla: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 967 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 92 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 78 cfs. Trout fishing slowed with the higher flows due to rain in the area

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 137 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: Closed for the season.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using spoons and spinner baits for northern pike. We had no reports on other species.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was very good using salmon peach Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout up to 22 inches. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake: Fishing was very good using spinner night crawler rigs, crank baits, minnows and grubs for walleye. Fishing was good using crank baits and grubs for white bass. Fishing was very good using tubes, senkos, chigger craws, worms and jigs for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using liver, minnows, night crawlers and dough bait for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using small tubes, roadrunners and minnows for crappie.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing from boats was fair to good using jigs, worms, tubes and salt craws for smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and spinner-night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing from the bank was slow for all species. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 2,220 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was good using clousers, big streamers, spoons and jerk baits for tiger musky. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and Power Bait for trout. Fishing for catfish was slow. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: Trout fishing was very good using worms and bead-head nymphs.

Canjilon Lakes: The lakes and surrounding area are currently closed due to hazard tree removal currently taking place. For updated conditions contact the Canjilon Ranger District at 575-684-2489.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 211 cfs and 244 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using Rapalas, night crawlers and Power Bait for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using senkos, tubes, jigs and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and an occasional largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using spinners and spoons for northern pike. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, dough bait and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was very good using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, Power Bait, worms, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs. Work is underway to improve roadways and parking in the main area of the park and is expected to be complete in early June.

Heron Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using roe sacs, salmon eggs, spinners and Power Bait in the Ridge Rock area for rainbow trout. A few kokanee were caught by anglers trolling Panther Martins and Z Rays. Fishing was slow to fair using jigs tipped with cut bait in 35 to 40 feet for lake trout. Four wheel drive was still recommended for launching at the primitive ramp.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 40 cfs and fishing had slowed due to the higher flows. Fishing on the Cebolla was fair to good using worms, hoppers and salmon eggs. We had no reports on the Rio Guadalupe or on the Valles Caldera waters. The East Fork and San Antonio on the Valles Caldera have opened for a full fishing schedule. Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was very good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms, spinners and Pistol Petes rainbow trout.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was slow to fair using garlic cheese, salmon eggs, Power Bait, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits, spoons, jigs and spinner baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using tubes, worms, senkos, chigger craws, jerk baits and jigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using night crawlers, Power Bait and spinners for rainbow trout. A few kokanee were caught by anglers trolling Arnies tipped with corn at 35 feet. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 255 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using RS2s, scintillas, zebra midges, red larva, black ants, RS2s, hoppers and beetles. Fishing through the bait waters was good using small jerk baits, salmon eggs, night crawlers and Gulp eggs.

Santa Cruz Lake: Trout fishing was very good using small jigs, Power Bait, Kastmasters, Fisher Chick spinners, Panther Martins, Super Dupers, salmon eggs and worms.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was good using worms, night crawlers and homemade dough bait for channel catfish and an occasional largemouth bass. Fishing for all other species was slow. Fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was slow to fair using hopper dropper combinations for trout.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, small tubes and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was good trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using spinner-night crawler rigs and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits, curly tail grubs and minnows for white bass. Fishing was good using tubes, senkos, jigs and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, jerk baits and Flicker Shad for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, minnows and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was fair to good using stink bait, shrimp and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. The surface temp was in the low 60s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 46 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: A construction project to improve the dam has begun and extremely low lake levels make it increasingly difficult to fish. The project is expected to continue into the summer. The lake is still open to bank fishing.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Trout fishing was rated as good to very good by anglers using worms, Power Bait, Pistol Petes, spinners and salmon eggs. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 10 cfs. Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: Fishing was fair to good using spinners and Power Bait for trout.

Young Pond: Fishing was good using worms, night crawlers, dough bait and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 25 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was fair using worms and night crawlers for trout and catfish.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bottomless Lakes: The main entrance to the park has been closed due to flooding in the area and will remain closed for some time. The only entrance to the park is from Dexter. We had no reports from anglers.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week. The Seven Rivers Day Use area has reopened along with the boat ramp and shoreline access.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: The water level has been lowered for shoreline and dock work. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs, spinners and Pistol Petes. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using homemade dough bait, night crawlers and liver for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Lake Van: Fishing was fair using liver, dough bait, night crawlers and shrimp for channel catfish. A few trout were caught by anglers using night crawlers and worms. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was fair to good using night crawlers and dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 69 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 5.3 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits and grubs for white bass. A few walleye were caught by anglers using Wally Divers. We had no reports on other species. The east side boat ramp is closed.
