McMurry inducts former Ram

A former Portales High athlete was inducted last week into the McMurry University Athletics Hall of Honor, according to a release from the college.

Paul Rankin, a 1957 graduate of Portales High School and member of the McMurry track team from 1958 to 1961, was one of six individuals who made up the school’s hall of honor class this year.

Rankin, a two-year captain, mostly ran in sprint events, but was part of most of the college’s early success as part of the Indian relay teams. He was a junior on the 1960 team that won its first meet in school history, and a senior on the 1961 team that won six meet championships and was one of three teams inducted into the McMurry hall of honors.

A track athlete and football player when he attended Portales, Rankin lettered all four years at McMurry.

Following Rankin’s 1962 graduation from McMurry, he served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years, where he flew 273 combat missions and reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. He retired as an accountant in 2004.
