Staff report

ALBUQUERQUE — Portales High’s track teams didn’t score a lot of points on Friday in the Class 3A state track meet at the University of New Mexico’s track facility, but with a combined 14 events lined up for today they have hopes of doing some damage.

The PHS girls finished the day with five points on a fourth by sophomore Amanda Schmidt in shot put and a fifth by sophomore Sheraya Cox in long jump, while the boys’ lone tally came when junior Paul Conrow placed sixth in high jump.

The Lady Rams qualified fifth for today’s finals with a time of 51.24 seconds.

“I was pleased with how our kids performed today,” Rams coach Glenn Johnson said. “We ended up with a lot of personal bests, and that’s what you’re looking for at the end of the season.”

Conrow went 6 feet to take sixth place in high jump. Meantime, the Rams have junior David Viera competing at 8 a.m. today in javelin.

On the track, seniors Michael Nichols and Matthew Shelly qualified fourth and sixth, respectively, on Friday in the 100 hurdles while Nichols was fourth in the 300 hurdles. The Rams also qualified their 800, 1,600 medley and 1,600 relays for today’s finals.

“We’re hoping to have two on the (awards) podium for the 100 hurdles, and Michael in the 300,” Johnson said. “Right now, we’re just as excited as heck to get in some finals and see how many we can get on the podium.”

For the Lady Rams, Schmidt posted a throw of 31 feet, 10 1/2 inches in shot put while Cox went 15-7 1/2 in long jump.
