ALBUQUERQUE — Neither the Floyd nor Elida girls had an abundance of athletes in this weekend’s Class 1A state track meet, but both teams got a lot out of what they had.
Junior Jasmine Gomez, who was second in Friday’s triple jump competition, added 12 points on Saturday with a win in the 400 and a second-place finish in long jump to help the Lady Broncos finish seventh in team competition with 31 points.
Floyd, with three girls in the meet, finished one point behind Melrose — which got 28 points from junior Caley Barnard — and two behind fifth-place Mountainair. Meantime, Elida was 12th with 11 points.
“They did a good job,” Lady Broncos coach Adam Terry said of Gomez and seniors Taryn Lee and Tessa Nall. “We were in nine events and placed in eight of them. Tessa improved in her mile time and Jasmine improved her 400 time and in long jump.”
Gomez ran a time of 1:01.69 to win the 400 after going 16-6 1/4 in long jump to finish four inches behind Barnard. Lee was third in the 300 hurdles (50.66), fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.909, edged for third by seven-thousandths of a second) and fifth in shot at (31-7 1/2) while Nall, fourth in Friday’s 3,200, finished fifth on Saturday in the 1,600 in 5:54.27.
Senior Kaylen Jasso notched a pair of second-place finishes for Elida in throwing events on Saturday, going 34-3 1/2 in shot put and 112-1 in javelin. The Lady Tigers’ other point came on a sixth by junior Marily Varela in long jump (15-1 1/2).
