The Clovis Civic Center was standing room only as Clovis Community College honored its 2014 graduates Friday evening.

“Welcome to the day we’ve all been waiting for.” student speaker Christine Visser said to her classmates during her speech.

In all, 733 graduates received diplomas and over 90 students participated in Friday’s graduation ceremony, according to CCC officials.

Among Friday’s honorees was Brett Greeno, 21, who moved from California to Clovis to earn his associates degree in liberal arts.

“I lived in motels, took a couple of extra semesters for some hard algebra classes, and had a few jobs, and I’m finally here.” said Greeno.

Greeno added, “It feels great. It’s a first step.”

Greeno said he is looking at schools to attend to further his education and wants to follow a calling to become a pastor.

Mother of seven and grandmother of 20, Sadie Lewis wrapped up her time at CCC with an associates degree in general studies.

“It feels too awesome,” Lewis said, “I thought it was just going to be like anything. I’ve already done some of everything in my life, but this is different. It’s just a feeling that I have never had before.”

Lewis said her next step is to pursue a job in elementary education and early childhood development.

“Just keep on raising kids like I’ve done all my life.” said Lewis.

In addition to honoring this year’s graduating class, CCC President Beckey Rowley honored two faculty members with emeritus status for their service to the college.
