Portales girls claim tennis openers
Staff report
Though one win came a little easier than expected, it was a fairly good day for the Portales girls tennis squad Wednesday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex.
In the first round of singles and doubles brackets, all three Portales girls entries came away with wins. Belle Youngerwolf and Samantha Lopez took a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hannah Montoya and Janice Romero of Robertson. In her singles matchup, Jessie Privett took a 6-3, 6-1 win over Raton’s Ila Medina.
“They played really well,” Portales coach Ann-Marie Bucksath said. “Samantha and Belle payed very smart. It was one of the best matches they’ve had all year. (Privett) was serving well, and she was playing aggressive.”
Hannah Evans and McKenzie Bucksath defeated their scheduled opponent by default, because the team from Rehoboth stayed home for testing.
All three teams play again this morning, and could each play up to three matches if they reach the championship.
In boys action, Austin Lucero was knocked out 6-2, 6-4 by by Taos’ Marcus Hofer-Curl. Portales boys coach Logan Brown said early nerves played a role. He fell behind 5-0 in the second set before rallying.
“He found his game in the second set, but it was a little too late,” Brown said. “He’ll have his chance again on Friday (in team competition against Hope Christian).”
