New Mexico fishing report — May 8

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week. Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 9.3 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using parachute adams and small mayfly nymphs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using worms. Clayton Lake: Fishing was very good using Power Bait and spinners for trout up to 18 inches. Anglers did well from the bank and from boats. We had no reports on other species. Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair using minnows and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was fair to good using senkos, tubes, worms, jerk baits and spinner baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits and spinner-night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing was fair using crank baits and Kastmasters for white bass. We had no reports on other species. Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs and small prince nymphs. Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using Daredevles, Kastmasters, Super Dupers and Power Bait for trout. Eagle Nest Lake: Hot spot for northern pike: Fishing was very good using Rapalas, clousers, Daredevles and Johnson spoons for northern pike. Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for perch. The main boat ramp is open but there is no boat dock in the water at this time. Hopewell Lake: As of this past weekend about half of the lake was still iced over. We had no reports from anglers. Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Maloya: Hot spot for trout: Trout fishing continued hot this past week for anglers using Power Bait, salmon eggs, corn, worms, homemade dough baits, Kastmasters, Daredevles, bead-head wooly buggers and Pistol Petes. The fish ranged in size from 10 to 18 inches. Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week. Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Maxwell Lake 13: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, Kastmasters, Super Dupers, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and worms. We had no reports on other species. Monastery Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, worms and spinners for trout. Morphy Lake: Fishing continued to be very good this past week as anglers did well using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms, Kastmasters, Pistol Petes and small Daredevles for trout. The boat ramp remains closed due to low water conditions. Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 104 cfs. The Bert Clancy and Terrero campgrounds are now open. Trout fishing was very good using flies, worms and salmon eggs. Josh Hanson of Albuquerque had an excellent trip up here this past week. He caught several browns and rainbows while using bead-head prince nymphs on a dry dropper rig during the day and blue duns in the evening hours. Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 103 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Costilla: Trout fishing was fair using dry dropper combinations and worms. Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 523 cfs. Trout fishing was slow to fair using large stone flies, red San Juan worms and weighted wooly buggers. We had no reports on other species. Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 37 cfs. Fishing was slow. Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 33 cfs. Trout fishing was good using bead-head prince nymphs and worms. Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 78 cfs. Fishing was slow. Santa Barbara: Trout fishing was fair to good using small bead-head hares ears and bead-head prince nymphs. Shuree Ponds: Closed for the season. Springer Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Daredevles for northern pike. We had no reports on other species. Storrie Lake: Fishing was very good using salmon peach and garlic Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Ute Lake: Fishing was very good using Flicker Shad, Wally Divers and Bombers for white bass. Anglers fishing for white bass also reported catching several walleye. Other anglers did well using spinner-night crawler and spinner-minnow rigs. Fishing was good using live minnow rigs and roadrunners for crappie. Fishing was good using tubes, senkos, chigger craws and buzz baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp ranged from the high 50s to the low 60s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair using spinner-night crawler rigs and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was fair using tubes, grubs, wooly buggers, jerk baits and spinners for smallmouth bass. Anglers trolling crank baits picked up a few brown trout. We had no reports on other species. Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 821 cfs.We had no reports from anglers this week. Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week. Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair to good using jerk baits, in-line spinners, spoons and hot dogs for tiger musky. Fishing was fair using Power Bait, worms and spinners for trout. We had no reports on catfish.Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake. Brazos River: Trout fishing was fair using copper John Barrs and worms. Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week. Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 406 cfs and 468 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair using worms and Panther Martin spinners. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow. Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using spoons and jerk baits for northern pike. Fishing was fair to good using jigs, tubes, crank baits and jerk baits for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species. El Vado Lake: The State Park and the boat ramp are now open. We had no reports from anglers. Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, worms, olive wooly buggers and Pistol Petes. Heron Lake: Fishing was fair using jigs tipped with cut bait and roe sacs for lake trout. A few rainbow trout were caught by anglers using roe sacs, Power Bait and spinners. The lake level continues to rise but four wheel drive was still recommended for launching at the primitive ramp. Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 50 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using worms and bead-head nymphs. Fishing on the San Antonio was fair to good using salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Cebolla was fair to good using worms. We had no reports from the other Jemez streams. The East Fork on the Valles Caldera has opened for weekend fishing and the full fishing schedule for the East Fork and the San Antonio will begin May 16. Laguna del Campo: Fishing was very good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, Panther Martins, Fisher Chick spinners, copper John Barrs and wooly buggers for rainbow trout up to 20 inches. Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using minnows, small tubes and jigs and chartreuse grubs for crappie. The backs of side canyons were the best areas for crappie. Fishing for smallmouth bass was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using jigs, senkos and jerk baits. A few northern pike were caught by anglers using jerk baits and crank baits. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the high 50s. San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week. San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo on Monday was 259 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was rated as good to very good by anglers using zebra midges, red larva, RS2s and comparaduns. A few fish were taken on parachute adams fished in the evening hours. Fishing through the bait waters was good using wooly buggers, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs, night crawlers and Gulp eggs. Santa Cruz Lake: Trout fishing was good for anglers using Power Bait, Kastmasters, Z Rays, salmon eggs and worms. Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week. This pond was recently stocked and is a great place to take the youngsters.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was fair using Power Bait, worms, spinners and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no reports from the Catch and Release Pond.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species. Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Caballo Lake: Fishing was good using minnows and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was good using white Bombers, jerk baits and grubs for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using spinner-night crawler rigs, minnows, Wally Divers and Flicker Shad for walleye. We had no reports on other species. Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good using sweet beavers, tubes, senkos, jigs and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits and Flicker Shad for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits for walleye. Fishing was fair using tubes, minnows and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was fair using hot dogs and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. The surface temp was in the low 60s. Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 57 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Roberts: A construction project to improve the dam has begun and extremely low lake levels make it increasingly difficult to fish. The project is expected to continue into the summer. The lake is still open to bank fishing but we had no reports from anglers this week. Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week. Quemado Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms, Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on tiger musky. Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 2.0 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using worms, corn, salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using small spoons, worms and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 1.9 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Blue Hole Park Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week. Bonito Lake: Closed. Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species. Bottomless Lakes: Fishing was slow. Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week. Carlsbad Municipal Lake: The water level has been lowered for shoreline and dock work. The winter trout stocking has been diverted to Bataan Lake. Chaparral Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. El Rito Creek: Trout fishing was fair using worms, homemade dough bait and Power Bait. Eunice Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was fair to good for anglers using Power Bait, Power eggs and small spoons. We had no reports on other species. Jal Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species. Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 1,440 cfs. The water release from Sumner Lake will end this week. We had no reports from anglers. Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 7.1 cfs. Trout fishing was slow. Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing continued to be very slow for all species. Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was extremely light. A water release began last Wednesday and was expected to run for 15 days.
