Zias wrap up Southwest Region rodeo title
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s women posted its eighth team title in 10 rodeos this spring, capturing the Tarleton State rodeo over the weekend to finish the year as Southwest Region champions for the first time since 1992.
ENMU racked up 445 points at Tarleton to 165 for Weatherford College. For the season, the Zias compiled 2,265 points to 1,680 1/3 for runnerup Tarleton.
Junior Hayden Segelke won the goat tying championship at TSU, leading a 1-2-3-4 ENMU finish. Segulke split second through fourth in the first go with a time of 7.5 seconds, but won the short go with a time of 6.8 seconds to take the average. Kourtney Cleveland placed second with an average of 14.7 seconds after winning the first go, while freshman Lindsey Adcock and junior Keely Weger followed in third and fourth, respectively.
Senior TiAda Gray placed fourth in breakaway roping, splitting third through fifth in the first go with a time of 2.5 seconds. Adcock and junior Taylor Smith both placed in the first go of the event.
ENMU’s women won the all-around, goat tying and breakaway roping titles for the season, finishing 1-2-3 in the latter.
ENMU’s men did not score at the Tarleton rodeo. The Greyhounds finished ninth for the season in the region with 890 points, while Tarleton took the team championship with 4,380 points.
The Zias will be represented by Gray (breakaway roping), Smith (breakaway roping), Weger (breakaway roping and goat tying) and Segelke (goat tying) in the College National Finals Rodeo June 12-15 at Casper, Wyo. Meantime, senior Logan Medlin will represent the ENMU men in the team roping event.
