Portales cruises past Lovington on the road

Staff report

Halfway through the District 4-3A softball season, Portales has left little doubt.

The visiting Rams made quick work of Lovington Tuesday night, winning 12-0 and 16-1 to move to 4-0 in district and 15-6 overall.

“Because it’s Lovington and it’s a district game, it’s sometimes been an obstacle,” Portales coach Robbie Crowley said, “but tonight we went in there and took care of business. I’m proud of the kids.”

In its first four district games, Portales has outscored Lovington (6-14-1, 0-2) and Ruidoso (10-10, 0-4) by a count of 59-4.

Sophomore Kiersten Ramirez threw a five-inning no-hitter in the opener, walking three and striking out eight. The second game saw her allow one earned run on three hts.

At the plate, Ramirez did more than enough to help her cause with a total 6-for-7 night.

“She pitched very well, she hit the ball very well,” Crowley said. “She helped herself out.”

The same teams play again Friday in Portales. The Rams need to at least split the doubleheader to clinch the district title.
