ENMU women win seventh rodeo of year

BIG SPRING, Texas — Junior Taylor Smith earned all-around cowgirl honors in leading the Eastern New Mexico University rodeo team to its seventh win of the season over the weekend in the Howard College Rodeo.

Smith, from Rimbey, Alberta, Canada, was fourth in breakaway after finishing second in the first go and split second through fourth in goat tying after finishing second in the first go. She accounted for 203 1/3 points for the Zias, who compiled 305 points to 233 1/3 for Sul Ross State and 195 for Tarleton State.

Also for the Zias, senior TiAda Gray won the average and short go in breakaway roping, and junior Zoe Sharp finished fifth in the event.

Senior Gina Flewelling and freshman Lindsey Adcock also split second through fourth in goat tying, while junior Keeley Weger won the first go with a time of 9.7 seconds.

Freshmen Tierra Gray and Dustyn Sisneros took fourth place in the first go of team roping.

The ENMU men did not score during the rodeo.

For the season, the Zias lead the women’s Southwest Region standings with 1,960 points to 1,485 1/3 for Tarleton State and 1,317 for Texas Tech. On the men’s side, Tarleton leads the standings with 3,805 points while ENMU is eighth at 890.

The final regular-season rodeo is scheduled for this weekend at Tarleton State, starting on Thursday.
