Lady Rams bounce back to earn twin bill split

LOVING — The Portales Lady Rams let one slip away on Monday.

They made sure it didn’t happen in the second game.

Loving rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 10-9, but PHS pounded out 21 hits in the second game and rolled to a 15-1 victory, stopped on the run rule after five innings.

PHS (7-4) finished with 37 hits for thbe day, outhitting the Lady Falcons 16-9 in the opener.

“We should’ve won two games today,” PHS coach Robbie Crowley said. “We struggled a little bit covering on bunts. We have some things we know we have to work on.”

Senior Simone Laurenz went 7-for-8 and senior Francis Armijo was 7-for-9 in the doubleheader, including a two-run, inside-the-park homer for Armijo in the first game. Kassandra Rodriguez had a home run in Game 1 while Kailee Armirez homered in the nightcap.

Candace Martinez had three hits and three RBIs and Paychance Tiller scored fouor runs for the Falcons (8-4) in the first game.

PHS jumped on top with six runs in the first in the second game, though, and the rout was on. Seven Lady Rams had at least two hits in the contest.

Sophomore Kiersten Ramirez, who took the loss in the opener, tossed a three-hitter in cruising to the second-game victory.

PHS returns to action on Saturday with a noon doubleheader against Hope Christian at Wheeler Park.
