When I think of the adage “you are a reflection of the company you keep,” I think of people who I’ve grown with who have been just as hungry as me to achieve their goals.

I picture me as a tree and though the friendship branches break off over the years, I still feel the strong limbs and roots that uplift me.

There’s one friend though that inspires me.

Last year my college friend Sankaya was in Albuquerque on business and told me to visit her. We went out, had brunch, but mostly just got caught up on our lives.

I met Sankaya when I first got to Texas Southern University in a free-throw contest at the university’s recreation center. From that point our friendship flourished.

She actually played a role in my journalistic beginnings. While on the student newspaper, I created a feature series that showcased the diversity on our campus by profiling students from their hometowns.

Sankaya is from Detroit and grew up in the Brewster housing projects. While interviewing her, I saw how much adversity she had to overcome just to get to college. Now the girl is a regional director for the National Society Collegiate Scholars, and freelances for Google in her spare time. Two snaps for that.

Though we don’t talk much due to our work-filled lives, I’d like to consider her a friend to keep. Our friendship is sincere and I feel we both motivate each other to do better. With friends like that, you can’t lose.
