Portales High outfielder Omar Legarda connects for a first-inning single during the opener of the Rams’ doubleheader on Saturday against Capitan at Bell Park. PHS improved to 4-0 for the young season with a 13-1, 7-1 sweep of the Tigers.

Capitan came to town and mustered just two runs, as the first game ended early via the 10-run rule after a 13-1 victory, while Game 2 ended 7-1 in favor of the Rams.

The Rams have outscored opponents 40-2 in sweeping their first two doubleheaders of the season, both at home.

“We’ve had some pretty good starts in the past,” first-year coach Dusty Nusser said. “Right now we’re taking it one game at a time.”

The Rams put on another well-rounded performance at the plate and on the mound. Sophomore Grant Wagner struck out nine through four innings in Game 1, while junior Rey Ornelas fanned seven batters in six innings in the second game, allowing one hit and one run.

With only two seniors on the team, Nusser is pleased with his younger players performances to start the season.

“The younger guys have played to our expectations so far,” he said. “We know that there will be bumps in the road, and how they overcome adversity will be what’s important.”

Junior outfielder Darin Bonem had another strong outing at the plate, driving in four runs and scoring three more in the twin bill, Catcher Matt Martinez also had four RBIs in the two games against the Tigers.

Junior outfielder Omar Legarda was busy on the base paths, scoring five runs, while finishing the doubleheader 5-for-7. Travis Connell added six stolen bases and scored four runs.
